Decided that our Shetland is too good to waste in a field, his bridle has been binned by my helpful dad and I've been riding him bareback in a head collar , my daughter is 4 and enjoys lead rein rides holding the handle of her cub saddle, I'm only 5 foot and 8.5 stone he loves his hacks out with me and will happily piss off with me when I ask for trot. He's 5 years old proper chunky old fashioned type of Shetland , I took him showing and gt told he was underweight but the other ponies in the ring wobbled , we've had him since weaning and he's always been quite fussy about food he gets two feeds a day of calm and condition , he's shiny and in my opinion a really go s weight, no ribs showing , fee the back ones etc. his feet are amazing he's never ever had a trim from the farrier , I roll them with a rasp may e once every 12-18 months but he's got open access to a concrete stable with most at night , a gravel area and a starvation paddock with inimal grass and then during the day he's on approx 3/4 acre of rubbish grass , he's currently living alone after a fight with our old gelding and my then I've moved my mare to livery , he can see other horses over the fence and seems happy in himself , we ride out with others but I'm looking for a companion to suit his lifestyle . Backed hi last year as a newly cut 4 yer old, daughter has done s,al hacks all winter and now I'm doing 3-45 m ties on him and he's raring t go Nw that's his back ground 3 section a for my friend to and she wants him ridden by an adult in m an m. Open classes u til her daughter s ready for fr classes. Shetland will need more schooling , those of you that show Shetlands under saddle as adults how much riding do you do on them . He feel like he would take me hunting for the da and still be full of steam ...... Also what bridles fit normal chunky head Shetlands best ? Our old one was shettie sized but nose band too small.
Also what is correct turnout for showing Shetlands ? In hand and ridden ? I is he didnt do wellin our last class but I feel if he was muscled up and carrying ore along his topline muscle he'd do really wel and even if nt it'd be god to get him out showing under saddle before my daughter starts showing him
Any tips or advise please
