Well it finally happened, done in the field, had an anaesthetic, op went well with stitches inside but he took forever for the sedation to wear off and he was falling over behind even though I was holding him by the head collar, eventually he just leant against me for support. He tried to kick the vet in the beginning and then reared up x2 when vet ride to insert the injection. Lets hope all will be fine, he will get antibiotics etc.
