Anyone ever brought a horse back from Ireland? Got a friend who wants me to go over and find a nice hunter to bring home....just worried as to what sort of price they put on those horses and how much it would cost to bring them home......

ParkRanger I can get you some information - my neighbour spends every winter in Ireland and is always transporting horses back and forth. She is bringing one of hers back this spring. Her transporter is very reputable and really looks after the horses.

PS saw your post re needing sensible weight carrying horse. ID would be perfect or ID x?

PM me if you want more help.

It doesn't cost very much, horses are coming from Ireland all the time so you would probably be able to get a shared load.

As to price - no idea.

Tell your friend that she can buy a perfectly nice hunter over here.

Really, don't get in to the finding horses for other people situation - it gets very, very messy when it all goes t**s up!

AM, you do have a good point actually! Hopefully I'll find something through the forum - this is where my loan boy came from....

The hunting season will be finishing soon - keep an eye out in local papers and H&H - lots will be on sale......

Best time to buy a hunter is at the end of the season. If they are sound in February after a long season they should be OK. If you buy in September they will have had the summer to get over that little "leg."

We paid £125 each when shipping two back from Gorsebridge, mind you that was two years ago. If you go on the Gorsebridge Auctioneers website and download a catalogue its got a whole load of adverts for transporters. MacMahons are always bringing horses to Kent.

MacMahons shipped my two for me at £200 each that was just over a year ago they sorted papers etc. That was from their yard in Monaghan to near Watford (inside the M25). I have a friend who does transport back and forth he's based down the bottom of Ireland somewhere, PM me if you want phone numbers

I've just about to ship one and will be paying £200 plus VAT. PM me if you'd like contact details for the two transporters who have the best reputations (by all accounts).
