Shire horse runs into crowd

Now I know this is a bit shocking and I feel for the people that got hurt, but how did it make the front page of the bbc news website?

Should the organiser have made the owner withdraw the horse? Is there anything that can be done to make shows safer? Or is this just a freak accident?

jesu, you dont want that going mad near you! nor can you hold that if it goes (bit big for a pressure halter methinks!!)
 
I was at an event when a horse jumped into the crowd onto a pram luckily the mother was carrying the child so it could see or that would have been an awful accident. Horse was OK too.
 
LOL fails to mention the person with the broken ankle, broke it trying to run away from the St. Johns ambalance crew!!!!

I've seen that happen at a horse sales, the mum was to blame though she was standing with pram in collecting ring with horses hurtling around everywhere, it was horrible to see!
 
Tbh I would say this was just a freak accident.
Where there are animals there is always a potential accident waiting to happen. Even the most quietest of beasts can 'boil' over or spook for the first time at an unfamiliar object, smell or situation.
I don't know the full ins and outs of this accident and was not a witness to it therefore I cannot comment as to why this horse freaked out. Maybe if I had actually been there and witnessed it I may have been able to spot a trigger point/situation or spot a horse that was about to boil over.
I don't think anyone can truly foresee an event like this. I certainly would not advocate the use of barriers ( unless soft railings, that racecourses use) to form a defence for the public in a situation like this, in case the animal got injured as a result.
People can move out of the way of trouble so long as they are being attentive enough and there is room for them to do so.
Personally I think anyone that attends events such as this -or any sporting event for that matter - attends at their own risk.
Horses in particular are not machines. If a race driver cannot control a car when it spins off the a racetrack and into the crowd then how could a human control a half ton of animal ( or heavier) with a 'brain' when it also veers from the correct course?
 
I think if a shire horse decides it's going to go there isn't much that will stop it! I was at a show last spring when a shetland escaped and ran riot for almost ten minutes before someone managed to grab it and hang on long enough to stop it

It does make you think tho, (not about this show in particular but county shows etc) you do have to question the wisdom of mixing fairground rides brass bands etc with animals. Seems like these sorts of events are getting more like a hideous combination of a shopping mall, car dealership and Blackpool pleasure beach and all the proper exhibitors are increasingly pushed to the side.
 
was anyone at olympia a few years back? i remember santa's cart going on its side straight over a pony club kid, was seriously frightening, four naughty welshies.
 
Thing is - it's such a stupid place to do a horse show/parade too. For those of you who don't know Southsea common, the first thing you tend to notice behind you (on the sea) is the rather large ferries and their fog-horns!

Probably a freak accident being made 10 x worse by a slow news day for the BBC
 
unfortunately non-horsey people are either terrified of horses and won't go wihin 100m of one,or think they are domestic pets that trust humans 100% and are cute, easy to manage dumb animals!

lets face it, how often does one see parents not paying attention while their 4yr old pets a pony in the forest or at a show!!!!

I feel sorry for the shire, something must've scared him silly!
