Hi just want peoples thoughts on this matter.I am thinking of getting back in the saddle after my old horse retired some 5 years ago.I am 5ft 11 and 15 stone and have the chance to purchase a Shire X Cleveland Bay gelding does any one know if they are good weight carriers.He is a big sturdy fella standing about 16.2.
 
How old is the chap? If really young or old then obviously carrying weight capability is lowered.
Also depends on what you want to do with him.
I'm sure hacking, schooling and a bit of jumping will be fine and i don't think 15st is too heavy to ride especially as your quite tall.
If he seems the perfect horse for you then go for it and enjoy him.
 
Hi thanks for the reply,He is 4 & not done a deal of anything yet I dont intend to do any jumping (well maybe the odd log in the woods) Just a hack around really.
 
I'm sure he will be fine.
Your getting him at the right time...make the most of the summer and don't forget to post a pic.
Shire x cleveland bay sounds a lovely combo. I have a Shire x TB but he's only 2 so not sure what he's going to turn in to?!!?
Anyway, go get him :)
 
Have you any photos? It would be interesting to see as most of the weight carriers i have come across are TB X Shire or Shire X TB. Shire X CB could be a bit heavier (I may be wrong as there are no rules in horse breeding) and at 16.2hh he maybe be a little short for you (but only an opinion) but at 4 he could still grow a bit taller.
 
Weight-wise there should be no problem, only by sitting on him can you know if the height is OK for you.

I'm 5'10 and have a 15.2hh Clydesdale x cob and i don't feel under-horsed. 16.2hh is a good height and it's what you feel comfortable riding.

No good looking like a pea on a mountain just the same as looking like a string bean on a mole hill!!!
 
I would say that a shire cross CB will be MORE than capable of carrying 15 stone! Both breeds are renowned weight carriers. 16.2 is the perfect height for you too (I'm the same height with v long legs) and at only 4 he will still have a fair amount of growing to do (you are likely to have a 17 hander by the time he's finished up at 7). he will however eat you out of house and home (be prepared to part with over half a bale of hay a day!) and I imagine his shoes may cost extra if he's got the shire feet, but the love and affection you get in return will be so worthwhile)

I say go for him!

Thanks for the replies,I dont have any photos as yet maybe tommorow when I go and have another look, I will post them here with pleasure.He does have a good set of feet on him and a beautiful big Roman Nose a bit like my own.Thanks again for the advice.
 
Bloody hell, he's built like a tank (he's also fat). He's looks like he's still got a LOT of growing to do - I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up nearer 18hh! :eek: He's lovely :D

He would carry 15st without even noticing it! Just make sure you get a decent, well-fitted saddle with wide panels so the weight is well distributed. And with a barrel like that to take up your leg, you'll look tiny on him at 5'11.
 
He's a right cracker! And his bum seems to be higher than his withers so I agree he will turn out quite a bit bigger, what a handsome man xx
 
What a cracker...and you worried you would be too big for him, tusk!!! Looks like he could carry me, you and the donkey!!!

I'm glad you have bought such a nice horse and i hope you enjoy him, he's a stunner :)
