I haven't owned a horse for 10 years now, and always previously bought ID/TB, or Connemara /TB, or Welsh x TB, (lady rider now 45 years old!), I want to continue my riding but have limited time, but I have been offered a 'sweet natured' 1/4 Shire x TB Mare that is for sale locally. I know nothing of this cross breeding and wonder if there are any general thoughts on this cross breed. The horse is 16.1 and quite a nice middleweight (leg at each corner) without being heavy, and moves nicely. Any thoughts most welcome? What are the general thoughts on this mix?

I have one of those! I don't know whether she's typical as apparently she has a full sister who's a nightmare. Mine is a bit of a stress head in the stable but very easy to handle in or out. She's a happy horse, enjoys working, very sane and sensible about most things.

She was apparently a "delinquent child" and had to be kept firmly in her place as a baby but that good training is still evident and although she plays games - will snap at you when your back is turned but never aims to make contact and pulls awful faces about her girth being done up - she doesn't actually do anything wrong.

She's not the most cuddly of horses but is very endearing in that she always calls when she sees me.

She's a straightforward ride and gives a feeling of safety as well as being a performer - did several seasons of BE to Novice.

She's not the best put together horse in the world but her movement is very nice and when she's working properly she looks very smart indeed.

I like her a lot!

My mum has a 17.3hh mare who's lovely. Her dam was a full shire and her sire was a TBXwelsh D, though he looked full TB.

She's a lovely mare, very laid back and down to earth, and such a character! She actually looks more Sec D than anything though, lol, albeit a 17.3hh one!

Thank for you for comments so far. This horse would only be for general hacking and perhaps some pleasure rides, nothing too adventurous, so guess I should get on and try her out to see if I like her. I've never thought about buying a Shire x before, but the stables where she's at currently seem to think she's a rather nice mare.

A good friend had a Shire X TB, Dam full shire and Sire TB, they brought her as a yearling and she is now 16 years old and they have done almost everything with her. She is a fab jumper and a great hunter. Everything that has been asked of her, she has done. They have also bred a fab horse from her, which they kept and he is now 8 and a brill horse. Couldn't fault either of them.

i have a shire x tb mum shire dad tb he is absolutly fantasic and i wouldnt part with him, he is heavyweight but he can move. not sure how a 3/4 tb would be though, maybe a bit more speedy and sharp, ile let others who have 1 tell you their opinions.

I've got one - Shire mum, TB dad, but she's not even 4 yet so unbroken.
Her main trait is enthusiasm - she is always keen to please, sort of like a giant labrador....

I had a TB x shire (¼ shire)... some years ago. It was a fab jumper ... great hunter... and stayed fit and sound. It is a very nice cross IMO.

OH has a shire/tb cross gelding.
Complete superstar and bombproof as you can get.
Very light and balanced to ride, good jumper and great fun to ride.
He's the grey in the photo
