Shires Chicken Rugs

My sister has been saying for YEARS that we should make horse rugs in funky prints - people just LOVE something different, and rugs are the one area where it just doesn't happen - and there's SO much range for different patterns and combos! I have heard tell (but never been cool enough to know) ;) about 'seasonal' colours (i.e. you can buy old season colours cheaper) so if rug makers are switching around colours every season, I don't see why they couldn't be looking at getting some prints in appropriate deniers and waterproof grades :D Sure it'll be more expensive but I reckon the profit margin on these things would allow a little experimentation. C'mon - we're a long way beyond brown tack and just blue or green numnahs now - traditionalists will call it tacky, for sure, but I can see a massive audience of people who want something a bit more fun - look how much everyone wants the chickens (myself included!).

What do we have - stars, zebra, (elusive) chickens... not much, considering how many makes and models of rug there are :) Come on, rug people!

(ignoring for the moment fleece, particularly pink sheepy fleece...)

I agree floxie. I have seen a rug designed from the film frozen (it was a fleece I think) but they missed a trick with the minions from despicable me. They design all sorts of stuff from Disney and films etc why not horse rugs? Even just start with lightweight rugs so that material is cheaper and see the demand. There would be demand.

Shires need to do a whole 'farmyard range'. We need sheep, cows, ducks, tractors and maybe even pigs for the well'ard horses out there!

I'm a fan of wacky rugs. I have the chicken rug and a Joules Benjamin stripe one. My other rugs are bright red, purple, bright blue etc. If it's bright, it's mine! The only rug I regret getting is the Derby House apple rug, but it was too heavy so wouldn't have been used often.

Aww I love my dh apple one! needed a repair this year but is still going strong and is a great fit for my tb! :-)

Have you looked on eBay? I THINK there may be some in my local farm shop, I brought my girl a 6'0 from there a few months back. I'm going on Friday so will look got you then if I remember!

There is one seller on there that has 5'6 and 6' in stock, everything is is 4ft, but I'm too worried about the fit to buy either, if its like a mini skirt he won't wear it and if too big he won't wear it. Anyone advise on the fit of the lightweight?

My tank like 15hh cob fits the 6ft beautifully. She is very stocky and is a 6ft in basically every rug she wears (I only buy Shires, Weatherbeeta and Rhino rugs) so I'd say they are very much true to size. They fit her perfectly across the chest too.

Got the chicken and another one on today as they are the last dry rugs we have (!). I agree they are a good to generous fit, my horse has huge shoulders but the chickens are generous in that department. More so than her Rambo!

Yeah so...

Yep, no fill. It's a bit gapey round the neck for Dizz as he is very narrow. When it needs washing I'll have the t bar fastenings changed for adjustable ones.
