Shires grazing muzzle- what size?

Podgy young cob is moving field into more grass (:-(() and so I'm ordering a grazing muzzle. I like the look of the shires delux one but not sure what size to get.

Horse is 14.2/3 3 yo cob. Would you think cob or full size?
 
really depends on the size of his nose! I have a 13h exmoor in a full atm, the cob size rubs although he's a cob size bridle etc. the full is a bit large and I had to shorten the straps but so far, no rubbing :)

I went for full for my 14.3 cob, roomy no rubbing.
 
Ha ha fair point. He still has quite a narrow 'youngster' muzzle but he has has pink skin so would probably be prone to rubbing. Can you use sun cream with it? He gets sunburn but don't want the fleece bit all slimy :-/
 
I too usually have cob sized everything for my mare. Cob sized shires muzzle rubbed. Full size bought ...... hey presto no rubbing. Straps at their shortest though. That was the old style shires. Just bought but not yet arrived one of the deluxe shaped muzzles. Again in full size.
 
My 14hh 's in full size. I've made the hole bigger as it was impossible to actually get any grass through, or for him to actually be able to eat it! Work great now.

I made one of mine bigger initially, as my boy got frustrated by it & would just take it off himself!

Now, I mainly use an ordinary sized hole muzzle, as he's got used to wearing one & so keeps it on just fine (bar the odd occasion!)

I swap to the bigger hole muzzle if there isn't much grass in whatever field he's in at the time (I'm on a livery yard, so they are rotated).

He definitely still gets less grass with his bigger holes muzzle than no muzzle at all - as you can tell the difference in bloating/size of him on the odd occasion he gets a muzzle off.

This seems to work well for us.

I went for a full size in Shires & KM Elite muzzles, he's a 14hh New Forest & usually takes a cob headcollar/bridle.

Brilliant- glad I went f/s. Can u ask how you expanded the hole? Did you use a Stanley knife? I'm worried that (If I have to do it) I'll leave rough edges that scratch his muzzle.
 
I got my barefoot trimmer to do it with one of her tools, but my Dad did my friends with a large knife. We've never had problems with it rubbing or scratching & P's got a white muzzle that is more sensitive :)
 
My 11h pony has a cob sized muzzle, pony was too small. That's a Shires one.
This is his second muzzle, he made the hole bigger on his first one all by himself :)
