Just wondering how the sizing comes up in the Shires Highlander sweet itch rugs? And what people think of them?

I bought a Shires Highlander turnout rug and it came up small - I bought 6'3 and I think I should have got a 6'6 at least. Weird because every other rug I've ever bought has been a 6'3 and has been absolutely fine! I don't want to fork out over 70 quid for a rug which isn't going to cover his bum/tail - exactly where needs covering the most!

Alternative suggestions also welcome - have been looking at the Amigo ones but they're a lot more money. But at the back of my mind is "buy cheap, buy twice". Not sure what to do!

My welsh cob wears a Shires Highlander combo sweet itch rug. She wears a 6'3" in all her rugs, including the sweet itch rug. The only draw back I find with the rug is that the bit that goes over her ears rubs (she is very sensitive) so I tend to cut that bit off. Her tail is worst affected and the Highlander tail flap covers it beautifully. If your horse takes a 6'6" in the Shires turnout then I would buy a 6'6" in the sweet itch rug.

Yeah what I'm saying though, is that he's usually a 6'3. So I haven't found the Shires turnout true to size. Just wondering if they're more suited to cobby shaped horses, than thoroughbred type? As it seems to be too short but also very deep in the body - like it's meant to fit a wider, but more compact, horse. So that's why I'm a bit confused about sizing now...

What build is your horse, Lucky788?

Mine's a fine-ish Sec D (photo here) but I found the Shires SI rug a lot bigger than the turnout rugs - mine is particularly generous over her bum. Annoyingly it's slightly too long in the neck, meaning that the ear-covering bit generally ends up on her forehead. Mine is in 6'3 Shires turnouts but they're a tiny bit short in the back so could do with 6'6. The 6'3 SI rug is massive in comparison - the tail bit covers nearly half way down her tail!

Is there a possibility that yours has been wrongly labelled at the factory? It might be worth measuring the length of the spine and side-to-side drop and emailing Shires.

She's very pretty! How big is she?
I bought the turnout rug from ebay, so maybe it was a dud... Hmmmm. That's good to know though, that the sweet itch rugs more generous in size. I think I'll risk ordering the 6'3, but direct from Shires to be on the safe side!
