It has become increasingly difficult to pick out my seventeen year old gelding's near hind. He's reluctant to lift the foot, when he does he hitches the leg as high as he can and takes several seconds to release the leg and relax. This has progressively worsened. Any ideas on how to alleviate this would be very welcome please. Thanks.

I have a simular problem with our Shire, in fact the farrier could'nt trim his back feet to her normall level of neatness last time.
Exercise does help. You could try maybe lunging a bit or walking out before trying to lift them.
Does he stretch forward with his front legs at the same time?

Can he back up normally/with fairly regular strides back and no excessive movement of the hind legs? If he cant he is probably a Shiver

Mine does that due to a previous injury to his hip bone. Vet/farrier both say he is not a shiverer. Just takes him a few seconds to relax and realise it does not hurt. Physio has helped alot.
