My horse seems to be constantly shivering. Can anyone shed any light/ thoughts?
She is not cold!!
She has got quite a think coat and feels warm to the touch, she is fine until she is bought out of her stable and then shivers from head to toe.
I though it was excitment but she is now doing it even when her tack is no where near.
It makes no difference if I put a rug on.
At the same time she has still got lumps as mentioned previously which I have now decided are heat related as we did a long ride yesterday and they have come up with avengence this morning - should be back to normal by tonight - it's very annoying!!
So obviously I am trying not to rug her as trying to keep her cool to avoid more lumps.
Any suggestions at to what the excessive shivering could be down t would be good.

Is she very nervy? I know a pony at our yard who, when she first arrived, was so nervous she'd shiver if someone went near her! This eventually righted itself as she became more and more confident...

Otherwise I'd get her looked at by a vet as the lumps and her shivering may be connected!

She has been on the same yard for 2 years plus and is very happy and settled.
Don't think the shivers and lumps are connected. She was shivering yesterday morning and had no lumps!!
Only mentioned lumps so that no one suggested to rug her heavier.
I think that it may be excitment - anticipation of doing something but it's getting quite extreme so wondered if anyone else had experienced it and whether it eventually stops?

I had had my mare for just over a year, and whenever I went near her she would shake/shiver violently untill I rode her, she was always so excited about being ridden, it doens't sound like this is what yours is though?

hi and welcome

my mare shivers out of excitement, she's quite a live wire (Arab) and can shiver from head to toe when she thinks she's going to a show.

It does seem a bit odd that the mare is doing it at home with the only stimulus being leaving the stable. could it be a fear response, does she walk it off or will she shake constantly no matter how far from the stable she is?

She seems to carry on until she is either ridden or has been turned out for a bit with a friend.
It almost sounds a bit like the mare mentioned above - but I've had her for 6 years so surely she shouldn't be that excited now?
And it has only become noticeable in the last month or so.
She shivers/ shakes before setting off hunting but i can understand that as we don't go very often.
My mare is a cob cross but not laid back can be quite silly at times.

That is quite odd that she would continue for a time even when turned out

has there been any feed or routine change that might have set her off and now she's shaking out of habit. I would give her a little while but if it doesn't stop or she starts losing weight or getting distressed call a vet or behaviousist, my girl only does it when there's a trailer on the yard or when she gets her mane washes (I'm azy and usually only wash before shows!)

I've recently upgraded her Slow release feed to the competition variety (same supplier) but surely that wouldn't make that much of a difference. She's only been on it a week and I introduced it gradually, feeding both together for a little bit. (Mainly due to previous feed allergies have to be really careful)
Routine has been the same all winter, I think she may be getting fed up of being in but I can't do anything about that unitl the rest of the mares change field (there is a conifer hedge in the current field that I think she may be allergic to - she post lumpy bumpy), until the other mares move she can't go out 24 hours as her individual paddock doesn't have enough grass.
