My 8 year old tb lives out through the summer 24/7 with my pony. Went to fetch him from the field this morning to feed him his breakfast and he was shivering an awful lot. I put rugs on him and walked him round, after about 45 mins he eventually seem to slow and stop the shivering.

Hes had no rugs on in the field for the past 4 - 6 weeks. This morning it has rained quite abit so he was soaked through and its alot cooler (13 degrees).

Almost a week ago he was diagnosed with navicular so had been having bute, navilox etc so lots of new drugs.

Hes now back out (he refuses to come into the stable in summer!) in the field with a medium weight Rhino turnout rug on with neck cover, and i'm going to check him again in an hour or so.

Just wanting your opinions on if you think it was just a combination of the wet and colder temperature which caused the shivering? His whole body was shaking, legs, neck, body etc.

Awwwww bless him, i was tempted to put a lite weight on my 2 earlier on but rain stopped and sun came out and none of them were cold so didn't in the end.
It is most likely the temperature drop and the rain as i have come up before to find my Welsh D shivering from the rain before. Maybe for the next few days just keep him rugged and keep an eye on temperatures just so you know what rug to put on him e.g. medium, lite etc etc x

My mare has always been a bit of a wuss when she gets wet but she has been noteably worse since I put her on antiinflammatories for her arthritis. BUT its hardly surprising when you think what we take when we have a fever - aspirin and the like! Thinned blood is less cold tolerant. I think the sudden change in temperature doesn't help much too. I'd use an unfilled rainsheet as it is still quite mild.

I would have thought a rug with no filling would be ok or a thinner one than medium, if the sun comes out it'd be too hot, its probably because its been SO hot then to get wet and it be a bit cooler has caused the situation
