Just as above really, has anyone had shock wave done on a horse, what was the injury and did it work? What did you have to do while the horse had it ie turn out etc and did it return to full competition afterwards?
Yep had it done on my old horse with hind PSD. Unfortunately it didn't work. Am sure he was on box rest with a bit of in-hand walking but further scans showed it hadn't worked.
In the end I just turned him back out and as he got no worse he went on to be a light hack but that was all....
I decided not to have it done as the injury was too old. It needs to be a 'fresh' injury to work. So if you suspect that the horse may have had it for some time it may not work. Mine was for PSD and she had had it for years.
Yes, twice, both times on foreleg PSD. Both times injury was acute, ie discovered within a few days of first sign of lameness so no long term injury.
Both times it was done while horse was still on box rest with walking in hand.
Said in a whisper: yes, it worked.
Said in an even more quiet whisper: (have returned to eventing).
I did absolutely LOADS of research on this and shockwave does definitely appear to increase the likelihood of return to work if coupled with a very very careful rehab program. Forelegs have a far greater probability of full recovery though.
Yes on unilateral forelimb PSD. yes it worked, did return to competition. would agree that forelimbs better than hindlimbs
for return to function.
am small anmal vet but have fabulous horse vet and of course read up loads and questioned him loads about it.
one thing that was interesting was - not box rested - also not on full turnout - had to walk every day for 6 weeks and be on restricted turnout.
Hils had it for his KS, it definitely made a difference. He was bute free up until he was PTS due to an accident in the field.
He was on a strict programme which included regular turnout and working him long and low for a period of several weeks before picking him up he went back to competing although not to PSG he did a couple of Ad Med.
as per vet forum. hindlimb PSD - was only in 2nd yr of vet school at the time, but good horse vet sorted him for me. box rest with in-hand walking, then restricted turnout. he went on to Medium and 3ft jumping. no further probs until he did his annular ligs in 2006 - unrelated to the PSD.
First was off hind PSD
second was for a splint that would not settle
third was for desmitis in one of his near fore sesamoid ligaments
fourth was for navicular syndrome
He came sound after all 4 injuries, debateable if it was the shockwave or other treatment given/rest.
The one I am convinced it made a big difference to was the splint
My horse is currently having it for tendonitis in the hoof (DDFT) it is also being combined with box rest and he has had steroid injections locallly as well (thro the heel ouch!) Vet seems to think it will work which is unusual!
Yes about this time last year my horse was kicked on right hind splint/cannon bone, had 3 sessions with 2 weeks in between each. he was on box rest all that time, then had about a month in the field before starting ridden work. Healed with no problems, just took a while to regain fitness, would have run at tweseldown in october but bruised a sole just before. that leg is as strong as ever now, just a shame front feet are broke!
oh forgot to say, my horse had it again in 2006 for his annular ligaments. didn't work. he ended up having surgery, sound for 6mths then completely buggered it up again. retired now.
