I am the proud new owner of a 4x4 and trailer. I am trying to get insurance organised before I pick them both up next week.

I have had my horse insured with NFU for 5 years.

They have just said they won't insure my postcode!!!

Bloody AA car insurance (my current provider) won't insure me as I've had the 4X4 modified WITH A TOWBALL.

Crackers!

The search for insurance goes on........

Ridiculous isn't it? What area are you in?

As to modifications some insurance companies have now started regarding snow tyres as modifications and will refuse to pay out on claims if there is an accident and you have snow tyres!

FDC

try sure term my dad has his 4x4 with them and they were the cheapest around by a long way. They also included cover for him to tow for no extra cost even though we dont have a trailer.

When we had a trailer, it was insured by NFU as an adition to my horse insurance but they were too expensive for the 4x4 so that was just insured elsewhere. I always ues confused.com, always check the policy and dont always go for the cheapest as sometimes you arent insured for much. I always said I needed to be covered whilst towing.
As for the tow ball, thats odd! I bet if you rang again and got someone else, told them it had a towbar then there wouldnt be a problem. Most if not all 4x4 have tow bars/balls.
I had a similar problem when I wanted to insure the 4x4 and make sure towing a caravan was ok. They asked the total length and then said it wasnt uk legal?????? and I wouldnt be covered. The caravan is a standard size albeit the largest and I was getting worried as we'd just bought it. I got this response from a few companies including NFU, then I got someone, probably older and wiser in this field and they checked with the underwriters and said no problem at all.

I'm in Blackpool and they insure my 4x4 BUT.... i did call them only last week to ask for a quote for hubbys car..... after 20 minutes i was told that they would have to ask the underwriters as unless it was parked in a locked compound/garage overnight it is classed as too 'high risk'!
They did call me back the following day with a quote (way more than the comparrison sites) but apparently they insure mine as i have 12 horses, 2 boxes and a yard with them.

Not sure what postcode area you are in Oberon but I live no-where near to GP... yet the start of our postcode is the same.... because of that they class us as GP.... little do they realise is that we are sooo much closer to MS but that doesnt come into it? I do wonder how people in Poulton manage as they are much closer to GP than myself, so imagine they also share a postcode but somehow i think it wont apply to them!

If your horse is insured through the 'local' branch (lancaster) then maybe try calling them for advice? My horses, boxes etc are with Lancaster but the 4x4 with the national call centre number (apparently they are the same company but you can only contact whichever you took the policy out with). I really would argue the fact you have your horse insured with them.

Good luck and hi - i never realised you were local to me :)

we went to farmers and mercantile as Nfu wouldnt insure my 18yr old lad to drive all our vehicles landy xtrail and van so if we needed him to drive one coudnt he is 0 now drives alot of miles and safe, less prangs than us parents

That's nuts!! Thankfully NFU recently insured my horsebox for a good rate; but it sounds as though maybe they are partaking in the postcode lottery in favour of individual records, not good news :(

NFU wouldn't even consider ensuring me as a freelance groom. All they asked was whether my parents were insured with them and as soon as I said 'no' they didn't want to know!

My discovery is insured with Frank Pickles. But they only insure modified vehicles, so a tow ball might not be considered modified enough (mine has quite a few modifications). I was insured with NFU but my premium went up to over £400, whereas with Frank Pickles it is just over £200. My trailer is still insured with NFU, as that was fairly cheap.

Try Admiral (or Diamond or Bell- same group). I found them very easy to deal with.

Be careful with Admiral, whilst easy to deal with, I was insured by them and from my own personal experience, they will use every tick in the book to not let you claim.

They wouldn't allow me to put a claim in when someone hit my parked car, all because I hadn't told them that I had points added to my license.... I had told them, 3 times and give them a form to send to DVLA for all the details, which they never processed. They then proceeded to invalidate my insurance as of it's reneal date (10 months earlier) -- on the plus side, they did refund me the entire premium, which was nice as I found insurance far cheaper than the, so got the motor recovered and still hard some beer money ;)

Did you find some insurance? I had a similar prob with NFU Mutual. Already had 2 horses, tack and trailer with them but when I went to add my 4x4 they said they didn't cover my area and I needed to ring my local branch, which I then did and local branch gave a quote. I couldn't get through to local branch when I wanted to go ahead with insurance so I rang the mutual call centre, told them the issue and they agreed to give me insurance then at same the rate. Blooming messing about! That said I do like NFU :)
