And to make it all worse it was a video of me riding  I couldn't believe how awful I was :( :( :(
My poor pony was trying his best under me but I had reins like washing lines, my arms and legs were flapping round like I was trying to takeoff and I wasn't sitting up at all :(
I know i'm not a fantastic rider but my riding in the video was awful and left me feeling like giving up :o :( :(
I feel like I don't deserve a nice pony like Herbie, Poor lad was trying so hard to go nicely but I wasn't helping him at all.
The video has left me feeling usless and like i realy can't ride. It was ment to be for an online dressage show but there is NOWAY i'm sending it in someone will shorley call the RSPCA and have my ponies taken away from me ;)

Sorry for the self pittying post. I'm not looking for hugs or sympathy. I just need a kick up the backside realy. I know all my riding faults so realy should be able to sort them out. I know I can do better than that. :o A friend is going to watch me ride today and she has my permition to shout at me lots :p There were lots of excuses I could use It was hot, Herbs was being lazy it had gone his dinnertime and he wanted feeding, he had a crab fly the list could go on and on.
Oh well enough winging from me. Hopefuly today will be a better day now i've seen the video and had a wakeup call ;) :p

Someone who looks at a video and sees ways they can improve, is a fantastic horsewoman to me! XX

I agree, if you don't have mirrors then video is the very best way to see what you are doing and make some corrections. It would be interesting to work on those points then video yourself again in a couple of months.

I wouldn't worry too much about the washing line reins, by the way, probably better this than gripping them for balance if your core is a bit weak

I think you will find pretty much everyone on here will watch vids of themselves riding and find far too many cringe worthy moments.
Its one of the things thats helps us improve. ;)

Lol I know the feeling.

Sometimes my mum videos me and I always end up with a mental list of things to shout at myself next time I ride.

Shoulders back!!! Is normally top of the list.

I try to video most of my lessons and comps and always cringe watching them back even if I get placed or my instructor is praising us... I think it's good to pick up areas of improvement and recognise your mistakes as it gives a driver to improve, you must be a perfectionist :p like me!! X

Know the feeling all too well m'dear. Don't get too down about it, if you really want a kick up the backside could you have a couple of lessons with a scary/nice instructor? They could then give you some exercises to do yourself so you can keep improving.

Oh Laura, dont be hard on yourself, I have seen vids of you riding before and you have nothing to worry about.

I often video daughter or OH riding, to help them improve things slightly, and they always say the video does not look like the way it felt.

If you want to see some truly shocking riding, come out for a hack with me! :D x

I'm sure you didn't look that bad! But I know how you feel :( Sometimes I look at my videos and think "WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT!? STOP IT!!!" but it's a great learning tool :)

Ha, Laura, must be something in the air - I posted this on facebook last night...

"Watching videos of yourself doing dressage and realising you're less Carl Hester/Sylvia Loch / *insert dressage rider of choice* and more derranged penguin on speed. #epicfail!"

Basically, you're not alone!

There is no genuinely good rider who will say they have no room for improvement! you should see the video as a starting point - an yourself a training program for the next couple of months, book yourself some extra lessons, then get another video done and see how you have improved - then pick what to work on next! it is a never ending quest i'm afraid.

But don't give up - its the ppl who are deluded into thinking they are brilliant riders who don't need any lessons, and say when it doesn't work, that its always the poor horse that's got it wrong who should be thinking of giving up!

Thanks guys.

Nah Did you hear me shouting at the video? Thats egsactly what I was saying :p

LOL JFTD thats so true :p :D I'm deff not Carl Hester I was more like Fench and Saunders :p ;) :o

Sprout I'll try and pop over and bring the video. It's shocking though :o

maresmaid thats so true, as I said there were prob 100 diff reasons I could have blamed Herbs for my riding but I hate people like that. It's rarely the horses fault.

i found a video of me jumping a few years back and it made me cringe! i was awful! but i know where i have improved and how i can still improve now and thats the important part.

no one is a perfect rider and as someone else has said, use this as a starting point and get another video done in a month or so and see how you have done :)

I totally agree with this, there are far too many people that sit screaming and shouting at a poor horse that hasnt a clue what its meant to do!!

Good post, My mum ocassionally videos my lessons for me and sometimes I'm so embarassed with myself!!

I think it is also good to video to see yourself when you are riding well too as this is a really good incentive to remember position etc next time you ride :)
