Farrier turned up today. No one told me that he was coming so the horse he wanted was in the field. Got horse in and started to brush the mud off of his feet. Farrier thanked me and said I must of been well trained as hardly any of his clients would clean their horses feet. I looked shocked and he said they just drag their horses in, covered in mud etc and if he says 'Are you going to do anything thing with their feet?' they reply 'Like what?'. I was shocked. I always make sure the horses feet are clean and mud free, I would never expect my farrier to have to deal with wet, muddy feet.
I even offered to pick them out for him but he said not to worry.

I'm with you on that one. Its common decency. I would have mine in about half an hour before hand to wash, groom and pick feet.
I'd die of shame if my farrier saw dirty feet!

I tend to treat my farrier like a king. Horse all clean and ready, bucket of water ready and the kettle on the go too!!! A good farrier is hard to come by in my area and you want to keep them as happy as possible especially when you have a difficult one to shoe like I have!!!

With you on that one. Have mine in cleaned down ready for the farrier. There have been a couple of occasions were I've been really tight on time getting back from work, so have just been getting them in when he arrived and when that happens I always apologise for not having them ready; but that doesn't happen very often so farrier is great at understanding when it does.

If my farrier is coming mine dont go out.... they have feathers washed day before etc. I try and make sure they are always clean etc and kettle on!!

As Merlins gateway is horrid and muddy now, I went to the trouble of hacking him over the common and through the pond up to his forearms, to make sure he was mud free.... but the time we got back he was dry too.....

Then we had hot choc together and a chat..... very civilised

I used to have them prepared.
Now, due to the unreliability of the farrier, I treat him how he treats me.
They should be in! (the last 3/4 times he didn't turn up.)

They might be clean! (he might be there)

If I take the time to pre-book my horses, I expect him to take the time to shoe them. Not just bang a shoe on, as he has ran out of time!!!!!

Ooops! I'm bitter! Time to change the farrier.
Any recommendations for the Oxon area?

Yep I am - I dont do my horses feet just because the farrier is normally 15 mins early, I end up getting there thinking I have loads of time to sort them out and he is already there and he has normally caught my horse and is doing his feet for me...!!!
my horses also seem to sense when the farrier is coming and will run around the field making it impossible to catch them so that when he arrives they are again all muddy....plus I keep my out 24/7 and dont have access to anywhere where I can give them a good clean down....
sorry farriers- i dont mean to be mean

maybe he doesn't come because he knows the horses won't be prepared?
Ours are in with clean feet and in in enough time to have dry legs, when we get warning. Today he turned up with zilch warning (just clearing a stud hole) but had a towel handy and as they aren't in a muddy field only had the actual hoof to clean.

Calico, the one Binkybex and I use is good - hard to pin down but when he says he is coming he does - he'll be there Thursday morning if you want to watch his handiwork.

Michael Gulley is also good (haven't used him for a while though)

I love my farrier he's great and helped my friend out yesterday with a problem as he was doing my pony. I had both horses in washed and towel dried their feet and feathers picked out hooves and had a filter coffee brewing for him. He is such a nice bloke and happy to explain things to a thicko like me.

Thank-you!
I think I will make myself available.

In response to "triplesandh" I always have made sure my horses have been available and clean.
After several promised visits that haven't materialised, I have changed my attitude.

However, based on MH's post I think a change may be at foot!
