OK sorry for the post. . . had a massive row with a so called friend at the weekend. I received a text message on Saturday morning asking if I had any BS (ok I take BS to be Bute Sachets) so I ask what is wrong with the horse. I get told it had an abcess and she thinks it was developing a secondary one. So I mentioned that she should poltice it and not give it bute otherwise she wouldnt' see if it was still lame or not, and call the vet out to dig it out.

Any way got moaned at because I wouldn't give her any bute as she was not able to do a poltice. Then I got shouted at as she then asked me for anti biotics and I again said no. Well I'm not a vet and I will not hand out bute as we have been given it on trust by the vet for our own horse problems. I would most certainly not give someone any of our antibiotics for something they need to call a vet out to administer.

My God am I being really mean or have I done the right thing by sticking to my guns.

Totally right!

If the horse has an abscess - how do they know that? They need the vet or at least the farrier to dig the hole out anyway to drain the infection and poultice it to finish the job. I can't see that deciding to just give the horse bute or anti-b's would be a miracle cure anyway!

If they don't know enough to poultice a foot, how do they think they know enought to decide it needs bute or anti b's?

Also - if giving it bute or anti b's supplied by you resulted in something worse - allergies or anything - you'd be getting the blame for it!

No - you are definitely right, stick to your decision and tell them to get the vet.

Thanks guys, I've been bitched about this weekend by her that I was unreasonable, but A: if I had given her any stuff for her horse and it had had an adverse effect I would be my fault. and B: If I need to administer Anti Biotics to my horses I always call my vet and talk it through with him on the phone so he can decide if he needs to look at the horse or not.

poulice is quite basic, if she doesn't know that she shouldn't be dealing with it herself. She needs to call vet and get experienced advice. She shouldn't hassle you for things you do not have the authorisation to give either. Even experienced people get vet advice because it is so technical, and 9 times out of ten, its not safe to go on self presumptions.

At the end of the day they are POM's- and therefore you would be breaking the law by giving them to her. Giving them to somebody knowledgable/ on advice of a Vet is one thing but somebody who can't poultice shouldn't be treating the problem without the advice of a Vet.

I think you definately did the right thing

Thanks Guys, I was begining to feel like I had been unreasonable with all the back stabbing that has gone on this weekend, at least you guys don't make me feel like a bitch

Well if she'd been that concerned she would have had an emergency call out rather than slagging you off.

How horrid.

I would take BS to stand for something else altogether (i.e. bull sh1t) which your ex-friend seems to have plenty of already.

You would definately be breaking the law by handing out prescription medicines. If you did and something went wrong it would come back to haunt you.

hard to credit someone has no idea how to poultice. Not exactly rocket science!

That is exactly the way I thought, now had she cleared it with the vet and asked me to call them as I am only down the road from her then it would be different, but even I don't administer Anti Bios without speaking to my vet first, and I actually hold them on site. Plus my Anti Bios would be no good for her as she doesn't know how to inject.

Yes especially since she has done nothing last year except borrow stuff off me all season last year whilst bitching about me behind my back. I'm one of those people who won't say anything till it gets to the last straw (Yes I'm a save it all up into one go) type of person, and then I will explode (not a pretty sitght me in a rage). So yes I exploded at the weekend, and yes it was over somthing really quite minor in the grand scheme of things but everything by then had built up so I can shoulder some of the blame.
