Looked out of the living room window to find that our landlords have started fencing our paddock!

(those who havent seen my previous posts - landlords decided at a meeting about a month ago that they wanted to make Ellie's field more permanent, and so were going to post and rail a section of the field for her.) Our landlords are famously disorganised, so we are truly stunned they have started so soon! Not a word of warning; just as well Ellie wasnt turned out at the time, as they have completely wrecked my electric fencing!

My only problem is that they appear to be making the paddock significantly smaller than we would like. At present, they seem to be working backwards from the middle of the field, and if it stays as it is, the paddock will only be about 20 metres wide

Not big enough to accomodate my dressage arena!

Easier said than done, they're tighter than a ducks bottom!

We knew we were going to encounter some problems when they said at the meeting 'the paddock will need to be a bit smaller than it is at the moment.' But not THAT much smaller, surely!

Looks like I will be feeding hay to Elz through the summer when she's turned away!

What if you were to go out and have a 'smiley' chat with them and see if you can persuade them to move out 'just a bit'?

You know, stand ten metres away and ask if they could just edge out towards you - aim for much larger and compromise on something halfway?

Or, would it help if you explain you'll need to put hay down. Lots of landlords don't like it because it stops the grass growing properly and encourages weeds. Suggest another few feet/metres would make all the difference?

Hmmm....very good point - Mum is going to go and 'have a word' when she sees them. We are paying £100 a month on top of house rent for grazing, so we should get a wee bit more than 20m x 80m!

Dont know that the hay argument will work:
'Once we've fenced it, it's your responsibility to take care of the grass and manage the paddock.'

Ah! That sort of landlord!

Fingers crossed you can get something sorted. Especially for £100 a month!!

OMG £100 a month! Wow! I'd be expecting at least a couple of acres for that - at least enough to turn out 24/7 in summer. I know it's not always so straightforward tho, and at least she's next to you - I have a 10 mile drive to see mine.

Exactly. We wouldnt be able to get livery anywhere for £100 (certainly not anywhere decent and close) and it is sooooo nice having her at the end of the garden again. Grazing is the only sacrifice really; luckily she is a mare who seems to prefer her stable anyway, so at least she isnt being restricted in that way!
