Shocking! Poor horses

Truely gruesome - and from other video's/articles that I've seen, its probably just the thin end of the wedge. The so called 'Big Lick' horses (be VERY careful how you type that in google BTW...!) seem to have it the worst - soring, chains, stacks on their feet often containing nails etc, plus tail cradles and 'nicking' the tail to make it stand up.

If you have a closer look at the tack some of the bits are pretty shocking too - and yes, I know any bit is only as good as the hands that use it but if you check out the contact used, its not exactly on a loose rein either.

On one vid/article somebody stated that they knew when they were in a Big Lick barn because it was so quiet - the horses often lie down all day as their feet are so painful. They do seem to have monitors at the bigger shows now where an independant panel checks for signs of soring etc but I'm not sure how effective they are - esp as some trainers are just getting better at concealing the fact the horses are sorn.

And yes, I know grim things happen the world over but it still doesn't make it right.

You do realise that if the feet were just padded and chains that would be a godsend for these horses. There are things in the pads of the shoes to cause more soreness. And the applying chemicals of the leg beyond the chains.

ABC is huge. That show was countrywide in Prime Time. People like Pepsi have pulled out as sponsors for the big Celebration show and I'm sure more will follow. So yes people are trying to do something about this horrific abuse.

What gets me is that it's more than trainers. Farriers shoe these animals and vets treat them. The public pay to go to these shows. It absolutely must be stopped. It is beyond horrific.

I am really hoping that trainer ends up in jail and gets what he deserves while in there. You know what I mean. Let him have it boys. Won't help his horses but he deserves it.

So please stop thinking things are trying to be sorted. People are doing something. FYI, CNN did a piece in the 80's that nobody really picked up on. Now with the information age things will change.

Terri

Very well put.

They say treat people as you would like to be treated yourself. I'd love to see their reactions if the cattle prod were to be turned on them, they were made to wear acidic pads and to be hobbled for sustained periods of time. Can't say they'd be willing eh...

Disgusting.

The guy at the end almost seemed pleased with himself! And when he tried to shut the gate door at the end of the clip and failed multiple times. I hope he gets locked up.

there are lots of people trying to change things but they seem to keep getting blacked from every angle lets hope this is a break through for those poor creatures.

makes sobering reading :(
Yes, it's utterly depressing.

I have to say this is reflected a lot in the horse world and world in general. Tradition, money and (even abusive) culture is everything to so many people worldwide. These people do not see this as abuse, it is tradition and their right to follow in their fathers footsteps etc. etc. blah, blah, blah. The whole TWH big lick scene knows and condones what goes on. Those who don't like it are bribed or threatened or bullied into shutting up.

Some of these states in US have very poor views of animals in general (as well as blacks) some of the undercover farming videos are just as horrific. :(

precisely it's the attitude and the justification of it that disgusts me and the unwillingness to acknowledge of change to a more humane way because what it's their right?!? it's tradition?!? MONEY!!! the lengths they seem to go to in order to keep doing it is incomprehensible to me :(
