Was just reading some posts on here when i came across someones signature which read "say no to rollkur" (cant remember who it was). My boyfriend has never heard of rollkur before so I quickly google imaged it so I could show him what it was. And I came across this photo, which I am guessing is a rollkur training method. Cannot even begin to imagine how much pain this poor guy must have been in! I knew I didnt agree with rollkur but it never even occured to me how the horses were trained.... I'm in total shock :( :( :(

That's not rollkur, that looks like one of the ghastly methods show pony producers use to build 'topline'. Shocking, regardless :(.

:) lol great more signatures are needed - but as a post said above not sure if this is part of the training of rollkur but it is the same positioning of the head and neck and will cause the same damage :( :(

Some people need to learn how to train sensitively and appropriately. People that use rolkur just want quick fixes and aren't prepared to actually put in the hard work and training to produce quality horses. How about we strap the 'trainers' heads to their stomachs or knees? Do people bend this way?...who cares!

Totally agree, but some of the alleged 'horsemen' who use it are amongst the world's top dressage trainers, presume I cannot put any names here? Unfortunately although rollkur is despised by many, the clear effects on the horse's way of going are not always punished by judges - as seen at the Olympics!!

In the quick fix category we could put draw reins - very common amongst the SJ fraternity and at top level.

Totally disgusting...and nothing to do with rollkur, but this is the second post on this forum to post this photo and shout rollkur. Frankly I would assume that if people are so pashionately against something they would at least bother to find out what it is.

You're right there!

It makes me laugh (not the photo, that's horrific) but there's a woman whom I know professionally that is always on about one cause or another (she's anti vet, anti vaccine, anti vegetables sold in supermarkets, anti-processed dog food of all brands....)

Anyway this photo came up on her FB as a reason for people to say no to Rollkur - and I felt like saying to her that while I agree the photo was horrible, it's not rollkur so get your facts straight first. Then it make me think about other stuff that she spouts on about and how much *****e she might be spreading about her other causes?!

Sorry, gone OT...

I'd like to know which show pony producers you have seen doing this? Nasty accusation to make without proof - put your money where your mouth is!

1. Not "one of the ghastly methods show pony producers use to build 'topline'" - thats not a show pony by any means, nor does ANY pony producer I know of ever subscribe to such practice. I'm not saying it doesn't happen - but I've never heard/seen it & have produced for many years.
2. Not Rolkur

OP I think that's rollkur. Rollkur is hyperflexion and that horse is hyperflexed. If you put a saddle and a rider on its back and a bit in its mouth, most people would agree with you that the horse is in rollkur. For me, the fact that it has been done with a piece of baling twine is irrelevent, the action is the same.

I don't have 'proof', but I know people who show who have seen similar things. Everyone knows these things go on in the showing industry, so don't bother to be all 'offended'.

Exactly!

This is a show producer in South Africa, although it is hyperflexion it is not Rolkur per se, I have no time for rolkur but people really need to do their homework!

Unfortunately things get perpetuated by that person called 'everyone' and of course the 'people'
Honestly, yes - things do go wrong and abuse happens the world over, but to perpetuate things by stating like you did on your 1st post, but then claiming not to have proof but people you know 'do' is a bit strong. Its a bit like being in the playground & saying 'my friend says'

I know people in the showing industry who have described such practices, and thought that this image resembled that which had been described to me, and said as much. It also appears I was correct. Roll your eyes all you like, but I'm not one to remain silent about practices I think are abusive.
