Shockwave vs acupuncture.... Any thoughts? (also in vets)

Just wondering if anyone has any comments about if one may be more effective than the other?

They are seeking to do different things I think , shock wave therapy are being used to promote healing and acupuncture is being used for pain relief .

I've just seen super results using accupuncture on a horse with SI issues. My vet is very experienced in it's use and said it really can be used to deal with all manner of issues. I'm going to have my other horse done next as he seems to have some issues in his neck/poll. I've never used shockwave therapy to compare but would definitly recommend accupuncture where appropriate.

I'm no expert and I can't talk with regards to horses, but I've had acupuncture myself and was told by the phsyio that it promotes healing because it encourages the body to produce anti histamines to help reduce the inflammation. Worked on me!

You really cannot compare the 2 like that.
Shockwave is veterinary, acupuncture is complimentary.

If I was forced to choose between the 2 for financial reasons then it would probably be shockwave, although that would depend also on the injury to be treated and the relative success rate.

Shockwave every time - I've had my arm fixed with it

Acupuncture is vague and potentially psychosomatic

I have had acupuncture recently myself the physio was very clear it gives sort term pain relief .

My horse had a course of acupuncture earlier in the year for sore muscles, I was amazed at the response.......and I'm not the most open minded person !!!!!

I support the efficacy of acupuncture.Our WB has sessions from our Chirovet and he responds really well,showing increased relaxation and flexion in his movements.As an animal cannot reason or compare how a particular treatment work,there is no placebo effect which i guess posters are alluding here. I have had acupuncture myself and find it really beneficial. Acupuncture has been around for a long,long time,with a scientific basis, and there is a huge amount of research into the benefits.Conventional medicine,in contrast has really been a development from the past two centuries,as before that Doctors were dabbling with the human condition.Most of the progress has been achieved since the last century,and after the wars. Acupuncture can certainly augment conventional treatment and this is why many Vets and Doctors support complimentary treatments.
