Shod vs barefoot

My mare is barefoot :) She has remedial trimming to keep her feet in balance. She does everything from hacking to jumping to school work :)

Mum has 2 mares, one was tried with no shoes but she couldn't walk (I say turn her out but whatever lol) and the other is shod all round and kept in work all year round.
Mine are never shod. If they are when they come to me I have them taken off depending on the horse. I don't see the need for shoes, especially on natives unless they have problems and need them.

My welshie isn't shod and hopefully never will be. I've never had a native that's needed to be shod, they've done everything normal, shod, competition ponies do =/ As my lovely western trainer used to say (god rest his soul) "If it aint broke, dun fix it"

Chancer has never has shoes, Farra did have shoes when we got her but they were taken off that week. She had only been shoed for just over a year prior to that and had no problems going back to unshoed.

Mine do a bit of everything and whilst the last week I have noticed a bit of chipping round the edges due to the dry weather (so am now hosing and using a dressing) to date have I have not had any problems with them not wearing shoes. My farrier says they have very tough feet and should not need them.

Cairo Clydesdale's foot health vastly improved when we took his shoes off. The first year he did need fronts on in the summer, but after that the shoes never went back on.

I feed black sunflower seeds and linseed for their feet and they are on feed system which is high in oil and protein but no sugar or cereals, with ad lib hay and short grass grazing.

If they need shoes, they will get them. In the past my TBs were shoed, my WB had fronts on, so I am not anti shoes, but if they cope without them, prefer to have them off.
