I'm currently in the horsebox on my way to a driving trial go the weekend in Edinburgh (home is north east England) and my wonderful three year old was put on box rest last night. I have a good support team looking after him, but thought I'd see what you guys thought.

I had a call last night to say he was in and dad had taken his front shoe off ( prone to gravel and therefore Abcesses so had fronts fitted 4 weeks ago) as it had twisted half off and the clench was stuck in his sole. There was blood on the clench and some came out of the sole when he removed the shoe and clench. Blood stopped quickly. He put an iodine soaked pad on it (undiluted) and bandaged round/duct taped til I could get there this morning to sort him properly.

I had one do this a few weeks ago, I tubbed and poulticed for a few days, nothing came out and he was almost sound after 2 days, like yours it was found quickly and treated straight away, the shoe was put back on about 5 days later once he was completely comfortable on it.
 
First I'd poultice and tub.

Then I'd find out why the horse abcesses, and address the issue; abcessing feet aren't healthy feet, and putting shoes on them won't change that.

TS, he has never had the best toes/white lines and our fields are gravelly, gravel gets in as much as I pick feet twice a day and tracks up. he's fed Alfa a with an all round vit and min supplement, and biotin. He's abcessed twice in two years, this time last year wen the fields got wet and minging and same again this year. This time, it tracked out of the heel, and left a biggish hole, the next time he was due for a trim we decided on fronts to try to prevent the gravel getting into the line as well as to try not to make him sore on the site of the abscess hole from last time as it grows down the foot.
 
Sounds like he's struggling with sugar/starch if his WL is that stretched. How much grass does he get? I'd recommend a decent mineral supplement as well as controlling carb intake; something like Pro Balance + or Pro Hoof. I'm using the summer balancer from Forage Plus at the moment, and am happy with it.

A stretched white line is a symptom of another problem, and imo it would be in the interest of the horse's long term soundness to try and address it :).
 
Thank you, I'll have a look when I get back- he's at grass 24-7 in summer, we have old dairy grass :( and he is a good doer so muzzled spring/early summer but fed on fibre (Alfa a/Alfa oil) with supplements all year round. He hasn't had a hard feed as such since he came off sure grow (he was on it november-march the first two winters)
 
Blood from a puncture wound would concern me. Is he up to date on tetanus shots?

If you can get hold of some hydrogen peroxide before the hole closes up, squirt it in and let it bubble... if you can get oxygen deep into the hole this way, you can kill off the anaerobic pathogens.
 
I have just had similar happen with 15 h tb who has thin hoof wall but has never had access or any foot bother, farrier said she was a prat when he shod her 2 wk ago and slammed hoof down when shoe was half on and the quarter clip went into side of her sole and few days later she went lame, but we acted on it quick and after 4 days of poultices and 2 days of dry dressing she had shoe back on today, and is now sound , she will be having bit do sedaline and bute next time farrier comes as obvious to us her arthritis in that hock is painting her when farrier lifts the leg up.
