Penny has been terrible to shoe the last 6 months or so, but have cracked it now... Sedaline worked a treat and she was cold shod on rears, hot on fronts . She has arthritis on hocks so having hocks held up must have been painful for her, so now I bute night b4 and the morning farrier comes 3ml of sedaline and a bute afterwards worked a treat, it was so nice to see her just standing there half asleep me cuddling her head and she never made a fuss,or pulled away once. May not be the proper way to do it but it worked, I was so afraid of her booting the farrier or hurting herself or me.

My mare has ringbone in her back fetlocks and in the farriers words " nailing on kills her" so she's just in fronts now and she hasn't noticed at all that she's got no back shoes on. :)

just a thought, years ago I had a tb mare who nobody could shoe she was a complete arse and most farriers had heard of her. I went through farrier after farrier and some even saying " think you had better shoe her yourself" until I tried yet another one who had a completely different way of holding her. No sedaline or bute in sight I had to do it all to get shoes on. This farrier had no trouble and the only difference was that he held the foot v v low, not pulled up like most farriers, he had his own way of doing her and she never put a foot wrong. He couldn't see what all the fuss was about and said a lot of horses who mess about is because their foot is held to high. He holds it just above the ground ( just)
