I am planning on Bug having the winter off to grow and mature, i was as of next weekend throwing her out, was going to keep shoes on and just ask for her to have them just put back on each time rather than new shoes.

Mum has just called me and the farrier has said she'll be fine without shoes on, so he is taking them off today!!! :(

I am prepared for not riding her but thought i had another week.

Sorry, bit confused - why can you not ride her with no shoes on? Can you not take her out inhand for a little while to get used to stony ground and for her feet to harden up, then she should be fine barefoot, no?

Apologies if there is other background info that I don't know about...

She is being turned away as she is only three.....time to grow up.

She doesn't do no shoes, very TB in that way, the only reason why she had all four on this summer while being ridden was because she just can't cope with none on.

Wish she could go without that would save me a fortune. :D

I knew in a weeks time she'd be having the time off but didn't expect them to come off so early, hadn't prepared myself for it. :p

I think that it would be a good thing for the shoes to stay off for a while. Generally what a lot of people do is when they get a horse backed and figure that the feet are not tough enough so just put shoes on, thinking the horse doesnt have very good feet. A youngster may still need their feet toughened up, and by using shoes from this early age you are not giving her time to get good feet. You are really just setting her up to have typical tb feet for her whole life, instead of giving her the chance to develope good feet. When the horse starts with good feet, they have a much better chance of always having good feet whether they are shod or barefoot.

She does have very good feet considering she raced on the flat......I know it's good for her, hence the reason we are doing it, just expected to have a week of riding left first. :(

She is a major wimp without them on, started her riding with out then just put on fronts, but then backs had to go on too. she doesn't even like standing on the yard for waiting for the farrier to put them back on.

She'll be in the field all winter so will do her the world of good, then they'll go back on in the spring to start her 4yr old year.

Hopefully she'll come back in next year with the same fantastic attidude to work as she has had this year.

In the mean time i'm going to teach her to bow, play football and fetch.

If she has raced on the flat she will have worn shoes very early. This is the best way to have bad feet because they havnt had time to fully develope and strengthen.
Hopefully with some down time her feet will have time to recover. Have fun teaching her new things.

Will do thank you.

She is going to be a bit of a grump if i don't do things like that with her, she loves having a groom then hacking around the block.

I'm not suprised she has bad feet if she's had shoes on since a 2yr old! Poor horse. Especially as the rest of her body will be growing but her feet will be trapped at the development they were at at 2yrs old.

If she's already has such poor feet that she's sore standing without shoes (at only a 3yr old :( ) on smooth hard surfaces, you need to try and fix them asap!

Use the time off in this winter to walk her out inhand with boots and pad to build up her feet and let them develop a bit. Without a lot of work you'll probably never get her back to the healthy feet she should have had by now, but they will improve.

Slight misunderstanding i think, she has really good feet, they are strong and she has a good amount of wall. Farrier is really pleased with them. She is just wimpy when ridden without them. she'll be fine in the field over the winter without.

i had a 4 year old, fully shod welsh c, that needing feeding throughout summer, people used to say she's welsh she doesnt need it, but u do whats right for ur horse x

Do think the point of the tread was slightly lost in all of this...wasn't about weather or not to take off the shoes but the fact they have come off a week early so she is being turned away earlier than planned and i'm going to miss riding her.

maybe i should make sure i word things better. :)

But you should still be able to do light work with her without shoes. If you can't there is something wrong with her feet! Just because they 'look' ok doesn't mean they are healthy. The fact you say she's even sore even standing on the yard waiting to be shod says her feet aren't as 'good' as you think. Hence suggesting you use the rest of the autumn/winter to improve them. Kills two birds with one stone - you can still work with her, and improve her feet at the same time.
