If you have read any of my other threads you would know I've been debating going barefoot with my ex racer for a little while. She removed one front shoe at the weekend and I have finally taken the plunge and removed the last shoe!

So what do we think of Celines new trainers?

Can't wait to start working her again now, her movement has already become so much more free and active ad I'm hoping it will help stop her stumbling. Fingers crossed! I'm a little scared about what lies ahead.

I like her new boots, glad she is happy in them! I have the same ones on my ex racer and he does not stumble any more!
Hope you get on ok, she is a pretty girl!:)

Thank you.

They do seem to be good for the flat footed round type hooves. Really pleased so far and she seems very happy and almost 100% sound in the field and on concrete without them now so I'm hopeful :)

Make sure you keep a photo diary - you'll be amazed at the changes! :) You'll also probably become foot-obsessed! :D

I've already started! And definitely already becoming foot obsessed, I find it so fascinating, can't wait to start seeing the changes. :)

Boots help make a weak footed horse feel comfortable and confident.

You need movement to heal a foot but if a horse is sore it won't want to move. Boots help with that and are a tool to use.

Boots are not nailed on and do not restrict circulation.

There is no right and wrong regarding barefoot other than keeping the horse as comfy as possible.

ImmyS, interesting thread and I am really interested to see how you get on with the boots. I had my cob's shoes removed last July and he has remained sound both on the field and on the road but is still struggling on stony ground which unfortunately I have to get over to leave my stables in either direction. I have decided to go down the boot route also. What type of boots have you opted for and why?

well I love em, but I prefer the barefeet beneath the boots better! But know that boots are an excellent stepping stone and keep the horse comfy through the process.

It is a big thing to go barefoot, and you have obviously been thinking about it for a while. Funnily enough there is a big article in the HnH about barefoot this week which you should read, if you haven't already!

My horse and my OH's welsh cob are both barefoot. Mine has never had shoes on and his feet are like concrete and he actually sounds shod! We took the decision to let the Welshie go barefoot as he is a known laminetic, he did have it rough to start with, but 12 months on his feet are coming along beautifully and he is a happy chappie!!!

Remember to give it time, be patient and keep us all posted on how she gets on!!!

Immys - I thought the socks only worked if they were pink... ;-) preferably with a gold stitched cuff.

The article in HH 'interesting' but in poorly informed so it's not IMO that helpful.

Horses that have been shod often, but not always, have very weak feet. Boots help while the feet grow stronger. They are rarely permanent and usually are only worn for exercise. They don't restrict the foot, but do provide more protection to a weak sole than a plain shoe ever could and on top of that are, over time, much cheaper. Especially if your horse fits Cavallos.

I love your boots!

Thank you guys. Will definitely keep you all posted on her progress, can't wait to get out on our first ride with them and see how she feels.. Will let you all know how we get on. She is currently turned out in boots due to the recently pulled hoof being a little more tender but if it adapts as quickly as the other did then she should be turned out bare in a few days. Thanks again guys

Cool - just go steady for the first couple of weeks until she has chance to lay some tissue down on her sole :).

Will do Oberon, planning on taking her out in hand for a while anyway to make sure she's comfortable then build up to 15/20 min rides max, then just see how things go

She looks great in them. I use the Cavallo simples with my TB mare on her fronts. I had her totally bare last summer, but after an abscess issue which meant she had to have four months off over winter (very stubborn abscess!), I started from scratch again with the work and booted her again. I've just started taking her out long-reining totally bare and she seems fine, but I'm being careful not to overdo it too much!
Hope your progress continues! :)
