I took coblet (who is barefoot) express eventing yesterday, it was only 70cm, he was cracking and came 12th, however he was slipping all over the place, going right under the jumps then dragging himself over them, and galloping at 2mph! I have entered our first ODE at 80cm in 2 weeks time and I dont particularly want to do it if hes going to be dangerous and slip into all the jumps.

Will it be worth getting a set of shoes just for the competition months and put some studs in? hes going to loose all confidence on grass otherwise. Then take them off after? My hope is to get him out quite a bit doing some events anyway.

what do you think?

Definitely!

I showjump so mine are shod all year round but have stud holes all summer season.

I wouldn't dream of jumping on grass without them, I went to an unaffiliated with friends yesterday and could barely watch the kids flying round the jumping and the poor ponies skidding and slipping all over :( and the ring was on a hill! I was terrified just watching them!

Worth it for both of your safety and then next time you wont be 12th....you'll be 1st ;):p:D

If that's what he needs then go for it, better than having an accident. Mine is barefoot but we don't do any competing, if I felt she needed shoes (like she did last year) I would and have put them on, they came off again and she carried on no trouble. I don't think shoeing is terrible if the horse is still looked after, has a good diet and can have a break from them every year

Yep, saw 2 horses fall right on their sides yesterday :( the ground was dry but i think the lush grass and daffodils made it extremely slippy. Going to get in touch with my farrier and arrange it :) he'll probably only need one set.

quick question, do i need to practice at home on grass for him to get used to them being there or just go for it? thanks :)

We do exactly the same thing. Our cob only has shoes on so he can jump safely on grass. He went over the first time he jumped on grass barefoot so for us it's purely a safety thing for him and his jockey. He has two sets over the summer months and then off again so he spends most of the year without. He's got great feet and he didn't bother at all with either the shoes or studs.

Have fun :D

Nope no practice needed as your horse wont know he's got them in :) he'll just feel a lot happier and more confident about moving forwards and jumping.

I think no matter how high or what level you're competing, studding up must be a requirement!

You might as well go in with no saddle and bridle :D

This thread is very relevant at show yest and even though so dry grass was slippy.
Can anyone also advise on what studs for these condition s
