I’ve thought about that issue often too OP.
maybe the best material for a shoe would be something that mimics hoof wall material but just a bit harder - maybe a semi-hard plastic, like the plastic shoes that are becoming more popular - they enable some slip but are ‘soft’ enough material to grip and ‘wear’ on harder surfaces.
Has anyone used the plastic shoes for riding and can comment?
I once went on a trek years ago over xmas on holiday in wales - i get to the yard , 2 horses left, one 16hh slim tb, and one 13.2hh native and me and this young wee girl get to choose which horse to ride. I offered her the choice and would ride the remaining horse - she chose the 16hh tb! So i hop on the native and we didnt go far on the road, when we hit a bend and a garbage truck was coming towards us! The whole group of horses freaked and were slipping like mad on the tarmac....the TB really freaked and jumped 1 foot up onto a raised path on the side, still slipping. Shrieks ensued. The native and me at the back luckily had managed to just stop and watched the whole display of chaos. That was the first time i thought about hooves and footwear needing improvement.
