I was speaking to my a farrier today and he informed me that there are special shoes avalible to help horses that are lame.he said they are kind of round shape and go round the hoof?? My mare is lame on her hind leg.it could be an option for me after seeing the specialist..

It's called remedial farriery and every shoe is differnt for each case. You need the lameness diagnosed by your vet first and then they can work with your farrier to find what sort of shoeing is best for your horse. There is no mirical cure for lameness and no one type of shoe for lameness in general.

I would assume your farrier is talking about egg bar shoes but again get your vet to diagnose and then get vet to talk to farrier and them work together.

Iv had 2 vets out and they dont know what the problem is they think she may have a muscle problem through a injury in the field which has left her with a slight lameness in trot.

So what makes you think "special" shoes will help?

If the injury is recent (in last 3 months) then best let nature take the time it needs and walk out to exercise.

Sounds like a bodyworker/physio might be able to help you more.

surely getting a specialist to diagnose the problem first would be a good idea then possibly get a physio out if needed depending on what the problem is.Thats the sensible idea and thats what il probably do..i was just curious to know what these shoes were

Yes - that's one way to look at it. I've found in the past that the Physio sometimes picks up things that the vet hasn't and also often sees patterns that the vet wasn't looking for.

has she had a full lameness work up? as in going to your vet clinic and being lunged on hard and soft, having nerve blocks to decide where it might be and x-rays? Might sound a silly question but it's so easy to have done, we book them in for the following week normally after vet has seen them. Usually you can diagnose from that but then sometimes they have to go to an equine hospital for an MRI to show up more. Sorry if you already have it just helps us to get a clearer picture.

she has had her fetlock and hock nerveblocked and she was fine the vet seems to think its something further up in her quaters.i sent her to a vet for a lameness diagnosis and all he said was it could be stifness? which im not entirely convinced it is but im no expert.she has had no scans etc.but im hoping that taking her to see the specialist he can do various scans and hopefully pick up on something.iv had an equine touch lady look at her and perform various techniques on her and she couldnt find the root of the problem she said seek specialist advice.Thing is this has been going on for a few months its not fair on her.i hope the specialist can fix us but must be realistic and know he may not

hmm that's odd that all your vet could come up with was stiffness, i'd be suspicious too! Well best of luck with the specialist and if you still aren't happy you can always seek another opinon from another practice, or you could even do this whilst you are waiting for the specialist. Keep us updated

Thank-you..I truely dont think it can be stifness but we shall see.the vet is coming out thursday to re asses her before sending us to to the specialist
