Does any one have an opinion on Shoguns? Or ex military Land Rovers?

There's both for sale nearby and my only exp with a 4x4 was an accursed Range Rover that nearly bankrupted me!

I had a shogun - never again!

Cost me over £1300 in repairs in the first 4 months and was in the garage more often than on the road!

I do however know people who have then and love them - think it's just luck as to whether or not you get a good one!

Someone i know had an ex army land rover.
It was the biggest pile or rubbish ever and always broke down costing her a fortune to fix!

Im not tatally against them just be careful which one you get as they will have had a tough former life!

Ive had L200s and shogun sports, petrol and diesel, very goond cars, comfortable and reliable.
Hold their value but thats not good when you want to buy one!

I love defenders - real workhorses, stable to tow with, great for getting out of sticky fields. Do not buy a new-ish one as there are reliability problems with all the electrics. Mechanically, defenders are very, very reliable on the whole, yes, the odd thing goes wrong, but in my experience they are very cheap to repair, there are lots of spare parts (the design hasn't really changed since they were launched!) and bits are easy to get hold of and fit - they are incredibly user friendly, if a little uncomfortable and cumbersome.

We have an L200 at work - I would never, ever buy one. Useless, ALWAYS in the garage, and gives me chronic backache due to its weird driving position.

But, each to their own - everyone has their own preferences.

Lol. Sounds like the RR I had. I kept making excuses for him (like a domestic abuse victim). Eventually I had to admit I had a problem and he would never be faithful to me. I 'went back' to my Peugeot 106. He isn't beautiful and sexy like the RR, but he is faithful at least!

I think you're in with a chance if the 4x4 you are looking at buying doesnt have a tow bar or has only towed caravans, be very afraid if it's got one of those ball and pin couplings or has farm in the owners address !!!! also dont buy one from anywhere hilly as these also have had to work hard for a living...

We have just sold our Pajero and replaced it with an 03 Shogun SWB diesel.

Despite (or probably because of) the bigger engine, the fuel consumption is better and the Shogun will run well on supermarket diesel. In many respects they are very similar cars. The Shogun is an excellent tow car and I have already dragged my trailer several hundred miles with ease.

Comparing the Shogun with an ex-military Land Rover is not really a fair comparison. The Landy will have been pretty well looked after, but abused pretty much all its life, depending on who had it and what they used it for. The Shogun is a much more sophisticated town and country 4X4.

Drive both and see which one you like.

BTW, most old landies have great air conditioning, as the wind gets in just about everywhere, they also often come with hot and cold running water. Hot from the leaky heater and cold from everywhere the wind comes in :D

Oh and there IS a reason why most farmers have a Landy!

We've had 2 of the big Shoguns, broke both towing a 510 and 2 horses (both did gaskets). Go for a defender (I brought a lorry). Also really expensive to repair (£3500 for gasket) and thirsty as hell on country roads. YUK

Had 2 Landys (petrol) (still got one -in retirement) and 4 Mitsus. 1 L200, 1 SWB (still got) 1 Pajero - Retired and 1 new Shogun (3.2). ALL diesel. Loved every one of them. Worked (apart from new one tho its not getting off so lightly!) everyone HARD!!! And they have NEVER let me down. I could tell you some stories to make your hair curl!!!! Hey but we had fun... :D Getting hay and water into fields can be.... interesting.... :D

I had some of the usual problems associated with cars over 10 years old. The new Shogun is treated with a little more respect but still works hard and has never let me down. Fuel consumption is generally about 26/7 to gallon on a long run towing (equitrek)

Landie is "in retirement" because I plan to restore him and I prefer the air con and twiddly bits of the Shogun to the Landie :D

Agree , we have a Defender 90, hubby goes off roading in it. Love it. So sturdy, reliable and good on diesel.

:)

Don't have an opinion on Landrovers although I would love to try one. We had a Shogun LWB until just recently and I loved that motor, very reliable, we never had a problem except from the central locking starting to play up, towed well even in snow and went virtually anywhere asked. OH has just replaced her with an L200, I haven't formed an opinion yet, will wait until Winter really kicks in.

I'm with Zoeshiloh on this one. Landy every time as bits are cheap and plentiful from at least a dozen places on the net and they are agricultural in their construction - not in a bad way - simple of design and build so easier to fix. The old disco 200tdi is a defender in disguise and the 300tdi isn't bad either, however the first TD5's were plagued with electrical gremlins cos it was the first time they stuffed computers on them and the early air suspension models were always collapsing. Talked you out of them haven't I? :) Just watch out for the rust... This weekend I spent saturday putting an entire floor (panel plus sides and crossbars) into my mates 300 to get it through an MOT.

We have A Shogun Sport, my hubby loves it. I find it took a bit of getting used to as to me it feels like Im on a boat  but it came into its own last year in all the bad weather. Hubby said I wasnt complaining about it then :)
I prefered the LandRover, latest model, it was like a big car to drive but apparantly even changing something as small as a light bulb is a nightmare as the have to almost take it apart to get to the bulb. Defenders are supposed to be fantastic. The best tow car weve owned was the good old Diahatsu, why did they stop making them!!!
