Disgraceful.

Far too large a rider for the size of pony.

No wonder you thought the other pictures acceptable, yours are about as bad.

And yes, you should be ashamed of yourself too.

This pony is much bigger and looks more able to carry you, you are sitting in the correct place, not on his loins and have a saddle which means you can rise when trotting which will help him balance.

I have not commented on the other thread, I feel everything that needs saying has.I had a standard in to break a few years ago, he was ridden by a teenager with a view to his small adult owner riding him but it was decided that it was better for the pony to be ridden by children of a more appropriate size so that is what he is now doing happily.

See all being judgemental again, excecp here is the thing. Ted which is the pony in the photos is pefectly capable and happy to carry me. The reason I know this ?

3 vets have all done idividual reports about it, 2 physiotherapists have been out and checked him and his breeder even approved it.

So perhaps next time before you attack someone why don't you do some reasearch about shetlands ?

I'm intrigued now. In PFB's post you agreed with GOM's comment saying PFB had shown an error in judgement both in riding the pony in question and in putting the pics and vid on the forum. I'm wondering 2 things; 1. Is yours also an error in judgement? and 2. Knowing how upset people are getting, why would you continue to chuck petrol on the fire?

I think it's called attention seeking and stirring.

I have to say, it is probably because of retards like yourself that horsey people get the reputation for being complete nutters.

It is probably because of nasty pieces of work like you, who can not be civil, that horsey people get a reputation for being complete bitches!

No one disputes your right to disagree with the OP but I am shocked that you would be so rude just off the bat like that!

Get a grip people. There are plenty of other things you can moan about, but this? A healthy shetland being ridden by a grown up that barely weighs anything. I really do think that is stooping a tad low!
Well done to all those who can and do ride shetlands, they are tanks and often not suitable for children because of their naughty ways. Much rather see this than those being seen to get fat and suffer. After all, its hardly doing Badminton horse trials or the golden horse shoe!!

Doesn't PS ride a shetland - doing dreassge?? How cool is that!

perhaps you would have 3 vets and 2 physios out if you didn't agree with what they were saying i.e. your too big for the pony, and what kind of report?? intriguing.....

I didn't disagree with them, but I had the thought process that most of you are probably having right now

Small Pony + Tall rider = Cruelty

So instead we got out 3 vets, Teds Vet who knows him and his owner, My vet and a totally independant vet. Each vet came out individually. We got them to voice their opinion on me riding Ted after seeing him being ridden, then we asked them to write it all down like an report.

The physios are a similar thing, The first phsio was out for Ted routine check and the second one was mine that I use for B

you know what, each to their own - I'm 5ft 10 and 9 stone and only stopped riding my 14hh pony five years ago, because she was getting old and I felt too big for her. Not got a huge horse now 15.1 (don't like huge horses too scary) :D but you do look too big on him and if you were just riding him to de-steam for a kid then fine, but if his your main ride, I think you would have a lot more fun on something bigger and yes his got a saddle etc and shetlands are strong little shits but it just looks uncomfortable for both parties!

^^ this

I think the front on pic is deceiving, the side on pic where you can see where you are sitting and the length of the pony makes it easier to make a judgement.

I would say it was borderline, as did you hence the vet/breeder etc advice but as you have done that and they say fine I have no issue with it :)

Don't forget that Shetlands were bred to be pack animals, carrying dead weight some of the time and carrying their adult owners at other times. In general native ponies are much stronger, pro rata to their size, than other breeds and this applies especially to Shetlands. A guide for calculating their weight carrying ability is approximately 20% of their body weight (including tack), so a pony weighing 600lbs should be happily able to carry a person and tack weighing 120lbs. Some people use a per hand guide - a stone in weight per hand, so a 9hh pony should be able to carry 9 stone. Shetlands are frequently shown ridden by adults and a balanced adult rider is probably easier for them to carry than an unbalanced child.

NM in fact DID get slated for it, the first thread was, I think removed, the pony was very fat and she was trying to get weight off, it has since got much fitter and has been out doing dressage.

Whose is that HHO member (a bloke) of over 6ft and rides his NF 14.1hh? I commend him and in relation to sizes, isn't his partnership much the same as a very lightweight lady riding a shetland? Can't be far off can it!?
