I think alot of people are missing the point about the size of pony/weight they can carry. It is not just how much you weigh but also how tall you are in relation to the pony. It is much harder for the pony to balance with a tall rider, however light and this cannot be compared to carrying heavier weights close to the body e.g. in a pack. So adults on 14.2hhs cannot (IMO) be compared to adults on shetlands, because the shetland obviously has more counter balancing to do and that can easily strain them.

In this thread and the other i think the riders are far too tall, however light they are and they shouldnt be riding these ponies as there is too high a risk of back and limb strain

Mince pie- clearly you will not be shot as your feet are on the floor- thats cheating!!!
only just though, and the little bugger tanked off with me promptly after that photo was taken! Quite happily carried me (at 5'4 and 9 stone) round the show ground whilst I tried to pull him up :D

I don't understand why you don't break the pony to a cart? That is what I did with my shetland to give him a job and keep him fit. I only weigh 8stone, but I wouldn't dream of riding him.

Get a cart!

Firstly, its a little unfair to drag NMT into this thread as she probably has no idea what is going on!

Secondly there is a vast difference between NMT and the OP of the other thread with the tiny coloured. NMT's shettie looks bigger, both height wise and is chunkier and NMT is very slim, the shettie will be a lot healthier having started to be ridden often.

i think what you have got to remember that that pony is bigger then the one on the other post, you have a saddle and your not sitting on its blooming arse to put it politly yes you are tall but i wouldnt say over weight, shetlands were built to carry adults not children but i would not expect a minature shetland to be ridden by an adult sorry but i do think that that is cruel definatly as its obviously unhappy about it, unlike yours although i dont know why you are bothering to fuel the fire when there is no need to IMO

A. The other pony was a miniature shetland, much smaller than the pony you are riding.

B. I am weigh less than 8st and I wouldn't dream of inflicting myself on that little pony.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should, just because the pony doesn't collapse doesn't mean he is actually up to carrying you.
