I have taken 3 horses to Potters over the years (last one about 8 years ago, one mine, the others belonging to other people) and I can honestly say that compared to other horses that I have seen euthanased, they were treated with as much if not more compassion. I was able to go into the box with them when they were shot (not sure this would be allowed now), the guy who did the shooting was incredibly quiet, and although it may seem strange, a real horse man. None of the horses were stressed - those outside waiting to be shot did not even lift their heads from the hay in the racks that they had when the gun went off. I led the horses straight from the trailer into the box and within seconds it was over.
I am not saying that this is the best way for everyone, but even my vet said at the time that who better to do the job than someone who is doing it every day?
I thought long and hard about posting this, but wanted to share my experience as someone who has been through this first hand - hope I don't get shot down in flames!

The execution was quick but some of those poor animals looked healthy and in good condition so if they are - my question is why have them shot ?

Newsflash: Recent modern veterinary studies have recently suggested that sometimes, in extreme cases, there might be some illnesses and conditions that cannot be recognised from the coat condition of horses on a grainy CCTV clip alone.
what's wrong with having them shot as a form of euthanasia, horses don't have the same concept that we do, but if we want to go that route, I'm absolutely terrified of needles, so I'd prefer a bullet to the brain any day of the week!
two of mine I had pts by bullet, neither of them knew a thing, both were tucking into their fav treats, the man who did the job both times was VERY professional, whereas I was an emotional wreck, I think it would've upset both of them far more if I'd tried to do it, neither of them I stayed with, the farmer stayed with Jim as he had an affinity with him (was the only bloke he didn't hate lol), and my husband stayed with Bailey (again the only bloke he didn't hate lol) because he felt he wanted to as he knew he wasn't fussy on strangers, spesh with the bloke being male of course so gave him that comfort in my stead, there is no way on this earth either of them would've stood for injecting, it was bad enough trying to get a tetanus into them much less an intravenous injection that HAS to be in the right place of course.
my friend had her mare pts by injection, she chose that method as she didn't want her 22 hour old foal to suffer the trauma of hearing a loud bang when was still in there with her, it was peaceful and quiet.
I know of incidences in both ways that haven't gone to plan and been upsetting for those concerned and has put them off that way of having them pts, but again, neither is wrong, it's a choice we make, they can't do it sadly so we have too.
Nothing is right or wrong when it comes to the method you choose, the fact is they are a very large animal and that alone brings a lot of awful facts about what happens afterwards too, I chose to have mine pts and taken away at the same time.
excellent children's ponies do not end up slaughtered for no good reason, they are either physically gone, or they are NOT good children's ponies and more like they have horns in place of ears and have shown they are too dangerous/wild to be a childs pony, what do we do with them, is it more cruel to dump them in a field barely bothered with because they're just too wild/dangerous to handle, or choose to end their days in relative peace?
sorry yes it is all done very stress free as in they dont know whats coming but all the horses in vid are very carm ,if you had an animal that was stressed my point was could he kill it cleanly and what happens if the horse panics i didnt know they killed them like this.and as i said before this is a better ending than live export.i still think that the pregnate mare should in no way have been shot its v wrong in fact the slaughterman should hav refused to kill her she diddnt look like she was suffring in any way..just for the sake of a few pounds surely he could hav tried to find her a home.it looked like she wasnt far of foaling,a lot of the dealers around here pick up cheap or free horses out of the paper and take them to potters.a friend of mine worked for one she dosnt any more when she found out what he does.
I really dont see the problem with the clip. I have been with 2 horses (not mine) when they were PTS. One by injection and one by Gun. Having seen both I would choose for MY OWN horse to be shot if ever I had to make that decision.
Of course, it would be a lovely end if they were all able to be PTS at home but it isn't always that practical and the livery yards might not want it, you just never know. I thought the guy in the vid was very professional and obviously knew his job, nothing wrong in that.
this guy does a good job drops them in one shot....and as for these "activists" sorry KNOBHEADS they should go back to whatever rosetinted little world they came from, have you seen what is happening to horses in the US because slaughter was banned?? well we don't want that happening here. propaganda is what that video is about...
Not this old chestnut again! Maybe we SHOULD close our slaughterhouses. then the horses can be shipped out to Italy for slaughter, or left to suffer in a field somewhere dying a slow death.
Have seen this video before, the horses are handled with calmness, despatched quickly and efficiently with no apparent stress. As for the 'pregnant' mare, that is supposition and not fact.
No I would not want one of mine sent away, my preference would be to have them PTS at home, but I am a realist and I know that this is not always possible for some people.
