how can i stop my horse's mane getting rubbed out by his rugs? he doesn't like wearing lycra hoods but i did think something like the snuggy hoods fleecey hood might do- but i really don't want to pay £60!! any suggestions? :)

I had the same problem last winter!!
I used a lyrca hood and it didnt make any difference, about 4inches of mane would dissapear in the middle of the neck. Its really irritating, even after a summer of growth she has wishywashy thin mane at the bottom and chunks and chunks of the stuff at the top.
Any suggestions that dont cost the earth?

I don't like to keep my mare in a hood, as she has to wear them in the show season and she hates them - gets really itchy.
I've taken to using a full neck rug in the field only - and the ones with a separate hood seem better than a combo.
I just use a good thick rug without a neck in the stable and she seems plenty warm enough.
I also keep her mane really clean and use lots of conditioner in it, as it is the grease that causes friction and rubbing. It helps to sponge the lining of the rug's neck as well, or even wash it if you get chance.
I still lose a bit of mane, but it's better!

yes i thought about doing that ironhorse...but he's like a fluffy/part pony and gets hairy really quickly- have already clipped twice this year... want to avoid as much clipping as possible
have decided to buy a snuggyhoods one... thats what credit cards are for  (he hates the lycra hood but i figure a nice soft fleecey one will feel nice :D )

What type of rug are you Using?

Last winter I got my TB a new Turnout rug, even with a Snuggy hood under it half his mane was rubbed out, I'm am almost certain that is is due to the shape of the new rug and how the hood attached to it! All my previous rugs have has the Surefit neck design (made by horseware) and they have never rubbed him!

New rug is going to be sold (Rhino without the surefit neck design) and a new Rhino (with the surefit neck design) will be bought which will hopefully get rid of my problem.

It may be worth you looking at other rugs to avoid a rubbed mane :)
