I’m looking for a 50g or 100g turnout rug for a Freisian, so a chunky horse, 6’3” . The tricky bit seems to be I want a standard neck and don’t want to spend over £80 really. She currently has a Weathbeeta which is a few years old.

Any ideas?

I just bought a 50g Weatherbeeta Comfitec OP, unfortunately having to return it as the neck was very low on my 14.2hh cob, I might try the size down to see if that makes any difference. It's a great rug though, 1200d, deep cut, allround really nicely made and was about £60.

I’ve just found that rug, but struggling to find it in 6’3”?

PE have some 20% offers on rugs this week, not sure which weights. I'd also tempted to try Swish myself as heard very good things.

VioVet, GS Equestrian and Equine Superstore seem to have 6ft 3s under £66, that was a quick google as my phone is playing up!
I've ordered the Gallop Trojan 50g to see if it fits my boy's shape better. But I really wanted the Weatherbeeta to fit!
Swish are getting a delivery of 50g rugs at the end of Feb, apparently -they look nice.

Also recommend the Weatherbeeta Comfitec. I have always rated Ruggles, but I bought a lightweight for my cob last year. It's had very little use due to him being quite a hot horse, but a seam was frayed within a few wears and today I've had to put new clips on the front as one is broken so it keeps coming undone. Seems like the quality has gone downhill a bit, which is a shame.

I have Ruggles for my others, a couple of years old now and still as good as new. It’s a shame the quality has lowered (I’ve noticed the prices have risen since I bought mine too). Their Heavy Horse range doesn’t go down as far as 6’3” or I would have considered them.

Have a look on the Maxima Equestrian website, they do 100g turnout rugs and are well within your budget. They are all 1200 denier and have fully adjustable front fastenings which allows you to adapt the fit for the chunkier horse. They also have 20% off all orders over £25 plus free delivery if you order before 1st Feb.

I tend to use shires and just bought the weatherbeeta comfitec 100g for my Arab it's a lovely rug I got mine at horseworld wheathampstead it was in the sale might be worth looking if they still have them I got a 6"3, the new shires ones also have a liner system so really handy

try Gallop rugs, very roomy, lovely loose necks. nice and reasonably priced too. we have most turnouts in many sizes for our horses. http://www.gallopequestrian.com/rugs.html

Sorry about the mix up with the 0g rug Meleeka, I guess I'm right to be off work with a heavy cold, was not quite handling technology properly today, arrgh!

Had a look on ebay and 24horse-sales (seller 1811) seem to have the Lite Plus 50g in 6ft 3 for £74.99. Also Viovet seem to have it on ebay? Worth a look through Ebay anyway. I'll have another look once I've done evening stables!

I have just bought a Shires tempest 100g standard neck 6'3 from ebay for just under £50
Really happy with it, I usually get weatherbeeta rugs but was recommended these by a friend

Thankyou. I do appreciate you getting off your sickbed to assist. Hope you feel better soon x

Thank you. I assumed they’d be a similar fit to Rhinegokf which didn’t even do up unless the rug was half way up her neck!

No nothing like Rhinegold, I have two horses with big chests, one a full up Irish draught, and a QH x ID also with big chest. I don't like anything about the Rhinegold. Hence why we are stocking up the wardrobe of these.
Lightweight
durable
colour code binding to depict the weight
deep
very roomy neck neck so long they reach the ears even when grazing
generous chest
cost effective
don't rub manes

I sold all my boys and mares Shires as they rubbed the manes off two of my horses

we take photos of all of them in their different weights

I ordered one of these as a cheapy. The chest is massive! probably the most chest room i have seen in a rug.

I took gamble thanks to your recommendations and just wanted to report back that the rug is a perfect fit :). I can’t comment on the quality yet, but I’ve given it a can of Aldi waterproof spray just to be sure. It certainly seems to be well made for the price and I’m thrilled it’s actually big enough round the shoulders. Thankyou for recommending. ??

Ah that’s fab! They sure are roomy! Fingers crossed it lasts 6 months then it works out very cheap :)!

I know you already got one but have you tried the big horse shop? Their rugs are designed specifically for big cheated draft type horses and are around the 80 quid mark. They are the only rug that fit my big traditional. I bought her wardrobe 4 years ago and they are all going strong, so really good value for money and their service is really good. Highly recommend ?
