Anyone want to help a first time buyer?! I've looked at so many adverts but not sure which are worth going to view? Anyone willing to give a view on ads, let me know! Thanks
 
Thank you! I'm looking for 15-16hh, age 6-9 ish, for hacking, schooling, maybe very low level comp if I get brave enough! Something sensible that I can hack alone, with brakes. Don't mind a bit green in the school.

I've found a few ads but don't know how to send links from my phone, will try it when I get to a computer. I suspect that there are things to read between the lines that I am probably missing!

Am trying to keep an open mind on what I want but I have a bit of a soft spot for chestnut or bay mares! Breed - prob not a pure tb or anything too delicate.

Not a competition rider so don't need proven record. Prefer no vices as I don't have the experience to know how to deal with them. Budget, prepared to pay for the right horse

Once you have done this stick to it, ask all the questions when you phone, even if the answers are in the ad it helps to judge the owners response. Phone do not arrange a viewing by text or email, I feel that you need to have a good feeling about the person you are going to buy from, this feeling will not be there if contact is impersonal.
Have a firm budget in mind, be prepared to go up a bit but do not contact a dealer and say I will be prepared to pay for the right horse, they will take you literally :eek:
If you go and see a horse, watch the owner ride before you do, no excuses, do not get on if you are worried it is better to walk away in one piece. A friend that is experienced would be helpful, video is very useful for looking at later.
A second try if you can before buying will enable you to be more sure, a genuine seller will let you go back, I like to groom tack up etc the second time and go for a hack, have a canter in a field if possible.
Get the horse vetted, even if it has no history of ill health.
If there is a history of PC/RC/ competition check it out google its name, contact the club secretary for references it is surprising what info is out there if you look.

Pretty much All what be positive said. In the first advert though it kind of sounds like horse is very uneducated. That is just my impression but without talking to the person not a clue. If going to a dealer try to find one that is highly reccomended as there are just as many bad as good ones out there. However dealers are useful in you can usually try more than one horse at a time.
At the end of the day no matter what the advert says you have to try them to truly get a feel for a horse. You must be patient and wait for your perfect horse. You may try 10 20 50 horses whatever it takes. Usually when people rush they don't pick a perfect horse and sometimes a disaster
 
^^^ Good advice, I second taking a video and also take as much time as you need, I've seen people take 10/15 mins to 2 hours viewing a horse. Lastly, be prepared to walk away from the big brown eyes if it isn't honestly the horse for you :)

I've made some calls - one has gone, two I'm not sure about and one I'm waiting for a call back.

This is a lot harder than I thought it would be! :confused:
 
This mare sounds lovely. It might be worth asking whether or not she'd be suitable as a first horse, although this also depends on how much support you will have at your yard. :)

Stunning 50% Arab 50% warmblood mare. 16hh very well put together and well bred.

Loves to hack alone in company and in groups. She will ride through cattle or sheep and in open spaces or on the road. Would make an excellent pleasure or endurance horse.

Due to the quality of her breeding she has also been recommended as a high level showing prospect ie HOYS.

Sad sale of a much loved and very special horse. Loving long term/perminant home a must.
