I'm looking to buy a 14.1+ horse over the next few weeks and would like to check that i've got my shopping list ready!

The horse that i'm going to view has tack included so that's a few things off the list but just want to check i've thought of the rest! I've heard weatherbeeta rugs are good but any suggestions on brands will be appreciated!

Rug brands will depend on what type of pony you get, as some are made for chunky monkeys, and others for little ones.
Rugs
Numnahs
Grooming kit
Mucking out stuff
Medical equipment
Headcollars
Leadropes
Tack cleaning stuff
Poss lunging/long reining stuff
Poss boots/bandages
Travelling stuff

I'm sure i've missed things, but thats all I can think of right now.

My horse came with nothing - well, apart from a whole heap of phyiscal and mental problems!

I brought things 'as and when' - as although it was summer, he was still needing to be rugged as was in a very poor condition and had to undergo box rest and veterinary treatment. So, I didn't need to buy seasonal things such as fly rugs, shampoo, fly masks until the following year but I did need to buy stable rugs fairly quickly.

Don't get too carried away - some of the stuff I brought, I had no use for and there were things I hadn't thought of that turned out to be essentials!

I'd say your esentials are;

Headcollar (or a halter) & leadrope - I brought a spare of each as well.

Selection of rugs - but, you can save yourself money and buy good quality turn out rugs and layer with either a fleece or stable rugs underneath. I tend to use Robinsons Requisite stable rugs as under rugs - as they are cheap as chips and underneath a turn out rug, they don't need to be super hardwearing.

I agree with the other poster about makes of rugs - Shires and Premier Equine are the rugs that fit my horse the best, but other people swear by FAL, Masta, Weatherbeeta ... ! Also, wait and see what they come with.

First-aid kit - mine includes blunt ended scissors, wound treatments (I swear by aloe vera, derma gel and sudo cream), purple spray (or similiar), hibi scrub, gamgee, animalintex, fibregee, bandages, duct tape, aromatherapy treatments, tea, epsom salts ...

Stable equipment - a large, good quality wheelbarrow, mucking out equipment will make your life so much easier!

Storage equipment - I just use bins for feed and went to B&Q to buy a trunk.

For things such as feed & supplements - I'd wait until you have chosen your horse - as the old owner will be able to guide you.

Tack and lunging equipment - again, I'd wait to see what they come with, before rushing out and buying anything. You don't want to waste lots of money on a million pairs of boots in every style, to find that it has never brushed or over-reached in its life!

It might be worth asking people at your new yard though about hay and bedding - I ordered in advance of my horse coming, so that I knew I had some for when he arrived.

Didnt think about layering rugs! Thats weird..I was just on the
Robinson's website lol!

Yeh i have a habit of buying stuff I never use/wear thus why im asking for help with the list lol!

One of the first questions I asked everyone I contacted was the horses routine i.e could he/she live out over summer and out in the day in winter! Didn't check yet about feed so will do when I go to visit!

Thanks for the help so far!

To be honest, if you are buying a hardy type, then you might not have to worry too much about rugs. Unfortunately, I brought a horse that turned out to be camper than a camper van!
