my horse is short coupled. He is very well put together but it means while he is just under 17 hands, he feels considerably smaller. He is also capable of being extremely nippy with a real leg at each corner. You "might" need to be careful on the saddle length but 17.5" fits mine properly.

I would class that as a short back! Not bad in my books but the conformation guru's might disagree! I've always been told horses with short backs tend to be great little show jumpers!

A short back is usually a strong back. Think of a simple trestle plank table. The farther apart the legs are, the less weight the plank can take before it bends and breaks.

My section A who is extremely short in the back will hunt all day carrying an adult.

My only negative observation is that they also seem to rear more easily than a horse with a long back, as it's easier to get their back legs under themselves.

Oh great haha! He only rears when I load him onto the lorry, to get his legs on to the ramp, a large exaggeration of getting his legs on the ramp lol, but who knows he may start when i break him in! He's a bucker thats for sure!

He has an advantage with flat work as he will track up without even trying, downside is they are inclined to pull front shoes off with the hind feet when playing about in the field, cure is over reach boots in the field. I have always liked a short backed horse.:)

Yup . . . my boy is short coupled . . . his back is extremely strong, but he is very, very nippy (can spin on a dime with absolutely no notice - despite being a good 16.2hh plus) and rearing is his party piece :). Oh, and he can jump 1.25m without thinking twice. We haven't pushed him yet height-wise, but I suspect he could go much higher.

This too. Kal finds it very easy to overtrack . . . he can really step under . . . but price can be lost shoes if he gets a bit excitable. I am another fan of short-backed horses.
