Hi all,

I have a 15.1hh mare I am considering breeding from, however there are two things really worrying me.

One is that she's quite short backed and I worry about her ability to hold the foal?

And two is I'm wandering what height stallion to go to, she's tb X knabstrupper - so not really fine. I'd like something around 15.3hh/16hh and something that will have the jumping ability.

Would 16.2 be a too bigger stallion?

This little mare has the most wonderful temperament and when jumping has the ability and braveness to go far.

Lastly, I don't know if this will affect anything but my mare was meant to make 16hh but due to a bad start she has never got there. Will the foal be bigger as my mare has the height In her genes?

Thanks

Have you thought of using a Lippizaner... ?? just wouldn't be too big for your mare.. very compact but athletic breed.. obviously ;)

I know of one standing in S Devon.. East Prawl

My arab mare is very short backed and carried her foal to term no probs at all. She just started showing quite early, as obviously she had less room to hide her baby!

Funny you should suggest a lippizaner, my OH's mare is 7 months pregnant to a lippi stallion! Will wait till foal's Born and see what I think!

Don't worry about short backed, she will probably carry the foal more deeply. I have two very short coupled mares, neither looks in foal for ages as they carry it underneath.

The foal may be bigger than you think as they can quite often throw back to previous generations, but all things being equal the little one should arrive a reasonable size and then grow on to be bigger. I would tend not to go for a stallion that is too big for this reason and also because it is her first foal.
