My mare has quite short strides, but does open up and lengthen when worked in a faster trot. She under reaches quite a bit, but again, it improves as she does a faster trot. When I last got the back man out, he said she had sore tendons, but even when I did the stretches etc., she didn't seem to lengthen her hind strides very much.
It's only really in trot, as she doesn't do it at all in walk, however she does often gallop around in the field. It also seems to be slightly worse on hard ground, so not sure if she needs to be fully shod (only has shoes on front feet).
