I have a lovely soft Albion short stud girth, that has a "pillow" of soft leather around the harder leather "guard" bit. The problem I have, is somehow it seems to rub Lucky really badly around the elbows

Is there anything anyone can think of that may stop it?

I think its where the hard leather may still catch her?!!

is her girth groove quite forwards?

not with stud girths (dont think could put one on and dont need it!) frank has a tendency to elbow rubs.- particuarly at times of moulting sudocreme seems to sort them out quickest. and I would be tempted to get her a sheepskin cover. although it makes them warmer.

I had a wavy type girth for him that was well padded around the stiff bit but with his movement he still got rubbed by the stiff part.

ester, yes it is

It is getting her on the "Point " of her elbow if you like? I managed to get it healed up, but it made her really sore

So want to try and find something to stop it happening again, as she wouldnt even walk forward when iut rubbed her last time

yup, points of elbows, his, if left tend to travel downwards down the back of his leg. It his hard to see how unti you see him moving.

He can't wear a straight girth they have to be atherstone type.

As I say he is worse when changing his coat and worse when the hair is long (but being welsh it gets longer than her ever will) so I keep him clipped quite a lot.

The best girth I have found for him is http://www.4dobbin.com/productDetail.aspx?product_id=1584
it is the first girth I have ever been able to take his sheepskin off and he be ok- which is fab otherwise he does get v hot under it, we have had it about 6months now and am just heading to moult so am hoping it is still ok.

doesn't solve it with the stud girth though and I know the albion ones are lovely and soft. I do find in the past that sheepskin has helped though, if not completely eliminated the problem.

Normal girths I use a wintec/thorowgood one and have no probs at all

Its just stud girths

Will try and source a sheepskin one though that will do the job

Thanks!

well think yourself luck, I can't let frank anywhere near a wintec!!

re vaseline, I have tried but if it is rubbing it just seems to disappear very quickly. have alwasy thought I could do with some sort of blister plaster to attach to him.

Yeah she is going to end up with sheep I think

Yeah she probably would actually, she has changed alot since you saw her I think...

Short girth on Dover used to rub, I used sheepskin very successfully with him but you will need to keep it clean, not much good if your mother still refuses to allow horse washing in her machine! I bought a full length girth sleeve and adapted it with a pair of scissors so it covered the girth straps (but was still able to adjust the girth) as well as the girth itself. Still have the said adapted girth sleeve if you want to try it.

KatB - just wanted to say thanks for responding to my post yesterday about the similar thing - sounds like mine is the same problem as it is the short Albion stud girth. Even with the fleece on it rubbed. I rode just in an old cottage craft webbing dressage girth today and it didnt rub at all and am now waiting for the proper wintec one to come in post. As I said in my post I definitely just think these was too much bulk in the groove.

I am sure I have seen detachable guards which fit over the girth, maybe that will suit Lukcy better.

(PS my mare is connie x ID so not confined to sensitive TBs!)

Sorry to revive an old thread but interested in what you all use now for this problem
Have a horse and a pony who are both being rubbed raw from their stud girths. My daughters pony has the long girth and my horse has a short equipe stud girth.
Be ever so grateful for any recommendations xx

just buy a sheepskin cover? I have amerigo and not had any issues but it will be pretty identical to the Equipe one.
