Short term calmer

What short term strong calmers are out there? No need to be comp legal. Tried most over the years, valarien etc. Obviously gets can prescribe sedalin etc but are there any non prescription?

I’ve used these before and thought they were quite good.

Have used v calm before but they are currently out of stock of the smaller one. The large one is a lot of money if it doesn't work.

Yes, I use this on my last horse and having seen it work our YO owner has used it too. It's not cheap but it really does take the edge off. It wouldn't dope a lunatic (not that I'm saying you need to) but it's really good for giving the horse a chance to think first before reacting, so it's useful if you're trying to teach something.

Equine America Super So Kalm is good, and you can give a larger dose if necessary as well.

I also rate valerian and calming cookies, although I don't use those every day, just half an hour before something I need it for - travelling etc.

I think you've possibly drawn your own conclusion from your own research. They rarely work. Ime you need to consider the horse's feed, routine, workload, handling, and of course, investigate and possible medical issues that could affect behaviour. I have tried calmers over the years and had absolutely no success. Problems I had were dealt with by sorting medical issues (ulcers), adjusting feed, investing in help from a quality trainer with my trainer riding my horse and changing the way I ride and deal with issues. Mr trainer also helped me understand my horse is a bit spirited and I just have to work with what I've got. If you need a calmer for, say, clipping, then I'd get a decent one from the vet.
