just wondering, do you think there will be a shortage of hay this year? the farmers havent had much chance to cut their hay in all of this rain and our hay field is completely flattened by the rain!
The problem will be that as there won't be much june hay about the protein value will be lower - although that will suit people with the more rotund equines.
There also might be a scrum to get the haymaking done and therefore reduce the amount of small bales as they take longer to make and require more labour.
We normally take 2 cuts of haylage but time is getting on for the first cut, if we dont get some good weather soon we may not be able to take a second cut.
I think it will as majority of farmers woould have done one cut already with a later one planned. However many have been unable to get the first cut in.
Ive got way too much hay this year so Ill be selling about 400 bales asap. Its going for 2 euros a bale so if anyone is in need..........! Dont know how youll get it home though
We have all our first-cut haylage in - got most of it fine only one field got wet. Hay we wouldn't normally cut till July time so not worried yet.
The hay shortage rumours go around every year so wouldn't worry at this stage, there's still plenty time to cut hay.
small bales of hay go from around £1.50 - £3.00. we pay a local farmer around £150 - £200 to cut, turn twice and bale the hay and they collect it on a trailer and take it into the yard. we usually get about 250 - 300 bales of hay and it works out alot cheaper than buying in hay. but the farmer always likes to cut his own hay first and we are always the last to be done so if he doesnt get his done til later ours may not get done!!
