anyone else suffering? i need to find hay big time. we've ordered in 42 bales, which completely cleared my supplier out and thats not enough for 2 horses in at night. no idea what we are going to do.
This never used to be a problem for me, as I have such a super haylage supplier I've used for years, but now one of mine is retired then I have to limit her calories, big time!!
I texted my haylage supplier earlier asking if he'd be doing plain hay, and at how much, but have yet to hear back from him...
There is little old hay about at the moment but you should be able to get new cut. It is next feb / march that this is really going to become a probelm according to my supplier.
I know it isn't ideal to feed fresh cut hay - but there appears to be no old cut left in surrey (or at least not any I'd be prepared to feed!) I understand that you can mix fresh cut hay with good quality oat straw to bulk it out and reduce the richness.
I think people are buying it now incase of a shortage. My friend gets her straw and hay from a chap over the road, who always has some in you pop over.
Well not last night!! Board on the drive saying that all hay and straw is now sold for this year!
~They had to borrow a bale off another livery and are going today to try and source their straw for the winter... this is in the Midlands BTW
We haven't seen a problem yet to be honest - we did buy a lot of standing hay this year though, and got a friend to cut and bale it for us. We've stockpiled more than we need, and will sell the surplus once we know roughly what we have to keep - I think so far OH has bought about 1000 bales of hay and 250 big bales of haylage. We also have 500 bales of small haylage, and as much oat/wheat/barley straw as we want, so no shortage around here!
We haven't got a major problem but my 2 miniature shetlands are stabled at night (due to one having laminitus) and they don't have loads of hay at night but we have only got a few bales of hay left and we were going to order about 5 bales untill new hay cut is ready to be fed but we have decided to go and buy a few bags of blue horsehage!!
I feel so lucky, I keep reading threads re price etc,we have had 350 delivered from our normal chap, at £2.80 which is more than last year> We must have been in the right place, and I do feel for everyone that is finding it hard to get their supply, hope you find someone soon
