Been looking for a while (H&H classifieds included!) and there seems to be a shortage of not just shetlands but under 11hh ponies for sale... Just me, or has anyone else found the same thing?

Riccalton ponnies are no longer bred in this country but definitely go and have a look at the Ulverscroft ones. They are bred for performance. Look round a few studs. I find the real gems are the ones that they consign to the paddocks as they don't think they are good enough to show when infact they are probably some of the best ponies they have ever bredm, they just don't realise it! Good luck in your search!

Have you looked at the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society website? They have lists of studs and usually ponies for sale. I have a standard Shetland and would recommend his breeder, he is a great wee pony.

We are just about to start advertising our 'wonder shetland'. He has been a leadrein legend, but is now sadly outgrown. Best, kindest, genuine and most trustworthy pony I have ever had the good fortune to meet.

I have a standard shetland for sale, but no-one is interested because he has sweet itch, which is managed perfectly with 'Stop Itch' and fly spray!

The most loveable boy ever....loves fuss, and fully registered!

....but if they are indeed in seemingly short supply....why does everyone turn away from my boy? It's not like he rubs himself to death....he doesn't now we have found the right combination!

I have been looking for ages - I want a pair of quality standard shetlands to show and break to harness!

Lots of mini's but not many seem to be breeding Standards!

A friend of mine drives her shetlands & does a fair bit of showing with them, if you scroll down to the bottom of this page there is a pic of her driving Roger & Rocky, they both came from this stud. Worth giving them a ring & seeing if they have anything for sale.

I have had one with mild sweet itch and my friends cob has full blown sweet itch.... even with Boett rugs, fly spray/tags etc; management its very difficult as they are effected by minor changes. I find it so upsetting that they are itchy still I have never managed to stop it completely.

I have spend many hours stresses and crying because I have felt helpless. So this is why I personally would never knowingly buy another.

I WISH THEY WOULD HURRY UP WITH THE TREATMENT JAB!

There definitely isn't a shortage of shetlands around - I have about ten (up to height miniatures mostly) I must sell, myself! And most every stud I know of (loads!) has stock for sale at the moment, and several studs are selling up. On the society website, and the other site mentioned above, there are lists of ponies for sale, and studs selling stock.

Where things start to get rarer is with when you start narrowing down what you're looking for. There are now more miniature shetlands out there than standards. There aren't many geldings for sale, they seem to be either colts or mares - most breeders sell on as colts, rather than gelding them. The majority of the market of shetlands for sale is either retired breeding stock, or youngstock - so either unbroken due to age, or never been broken to ride / drive.

So if you're happy with an unbroken pony, and not too picky on size or colour, then there are loads about. But if you're after a broken one, or a particular size or colour, then you may well have to look around for longer!

We specialise in large up-to-height black (some coloured) Shetland ponies with Millhouse, Threapwood, Struie and Muness breedlines.

You can see what we have at www.thordale.co.uk

2 lovely colt foals and 1 filly foal from last year. Just had a filly foal yesterday.

Prices include delivery to Aberdeen. (Thordale Viola won champion foal at the 2009 Breed Show.)
