I've just started riding my youngster - and being nice and sensible, am wearing my racesafe bp. The problem that I have is that it is too long to allow me to sit up in the saddle and I am now having throughts about hacking a bit off the bottom to shortern the length, just to allow me to sit in the saddle properly.

I've only had a couple of bp's in the past, but they have always been fitted and I have always ended up with my shoulders round my ears! Not great!

Is this a stupid idea? I know that I would never be able to use it to compete in anyway, as it is not a current standard.

Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome!

That's exactly what the manufacturer would do to shorten it!! They would also shorten the cover so you would never know! There is no reason you couldn't compete in it if you did shorten it. When you are seated, it would ideally come to the top of your bum crack! But some saddles with a deep seat will require it to be a touch shorter.

NOO!! Dont follow this advice ^^^^ Altering the bp yourself is dangerous and it will then not comply with safety standards so you wont be able to compete in it. Not only that but it will look unsightly. OP you have a racesafe bp? I had one of those and Treehouse can alter it professionally to the correct length, it will look as if it has never been done and WILL still confrom to safety standards and it only costs a small amount to do so.

To be honest, it's about 7 years old anyway - which is why I assumed it would not be legal to compete in. It's a choice between taking a knife to this one - or trying to get a new one that I am happy with......

I'm trying to be a bit of a cheapskate!

After this amount of time, you really need to replace it anyway! Kan are contoured to fit (taking "boobies" into account!) and will be fitted to you. They also, due to the nature of the foam, do not deteriorate over time, and will not need replacing.

As a fully qualified and experienced body protector fitter I can assure you that I am right!! Yes it would look tidier if the manufacturer did it but that's it!

Since presumably you're going to need a new one to compete in at some point, you might as well bite the bullet and get one that fits properly now, surely?

Personally, I'd be a bit worried about taking too much off and leaving too little protection, but that's just me.
