We are taking Donovan to The South of England show on friday, he is ok in the trailer but we have done very little motorway work. So, would you take him by motorway, which would be m20, m26, m25, or A roads from Ashford through tunbridge wells and East Grinstead? Motorway would take about 30 mins less than A roads.

That takes in my lovely commute to work!!

Personally i prefer m/ways as i think it must be easier for them...the routes you are talking about on the a roads are far more twisty. Nice steady chug on the motorway much easier. Just avoid rush hour...

Motorway. Loads easier on him and you. No stop/start/stop/start....
Good luck what are you entered in and I shall look out for you!

I'm too scared to drive a trailer on motorway so I would take the A Roads, I don't know why I'm so scared, I go on the dual carriageways ok

We are only in M&M A's and B's over 4 yr old. Then possilbly the championships, but not counting my chickens!!!!

I'm new to trailer driving and I much prefer the motorway! It's so much straighter and smoother, I can stick cruise control on and give my boy an easy ride. With A-roads, you can't tell how windy they are or how well-maintained - I find a lot of them have huge potholes which must be very uncomfortable for the horse.

ETA - I mean "windy" as is lots of bends, not as in lots of wind ;)

Personally I'd go on the motorway every time - unless it's hugely longer in distance!
Much smoother for the horses, although slightly scarier if you break down - as I discovered the other week! At least the traffic officers and fire brigade were with us fairly quickly!

I would never take my horse on a motorway in a trailer but shes not a good traveller at all and has a tendency to rear at odd moments, even when she's tied so short she shouldn't be able to

Usefull tip. Before you come off the motorway slip road ,dab the brakes a couple of times. Horses relax during steady motorway driving and the sudden slowing at an exit can take them by surprise and cause some unnecessary scrabbling.

I prefer motorways.
Although a few years ago I drove a friends Ifor and everytime a lorry passed us, I felt the tail wind of all the lorries and coaches sucking the trailer sideways. It was obviously safe and fine, but I could feel it, and I didn't like it! My equitrek doesnt do that at all, so I feel totally relaxed towing that on Motorways.

Thanks for all yr replies, I think we will go motorway. Someone at the yard has suggested shutting the top door on the side Donovan stands, but not the other one, so will try that. I think maybe I am worrying more than Donovan would!!
