Should be worried buying over 10?

Hello all,
Another one of those buying questions, with the current financial climate, I'm making sure I'm getting fair deal.

11 year old, very heavy cob 2500, done nothing speical, I'm only looking for happy hacking. But I'm um & ahing at age, does anyone have a heavy still going happy and fit in there very late teens /20's?

Im loaning a 21 year old TB at the mo whilst on waiting to list to buy a 21 year old horse from my local RS. I love the *golden oldies* - neither one of them act 21 - they are like youngsters on hacks, giddy, forward going & excited when jumping.Age doesnt come into it for me! my friends TB is 10 she acts like a 21 year old. Good luck with your decision.
 
I ride with a lady who has a 22yr old cob that's like a spring chicken! :D I also used to loan a TB who was 23 and could go like the clappers if I let him (very worrying if the hunt was out same time as us!). At that age, they should be sensible enough if they've been handled well throughout their lives and I would definately buy something 10+ years ;)

11 is no age, I wouldn't hesitate as long as he is happy and healthy. Look at it this way, you could buy yourself a 5 year old in the hope it would go on for longer, but it could become a field ornament in a few months!
 
I can actually see in my mind these 20 odd year horses snorting and jumping about :0). 10 horses, well I'll start with the one first.. Then two.. Poss three.
I have already stated to sellers I would be having a vetting done, they were fine about it, my mind is at ease with age. I think if an all clear by vet, this might be the one.

Totally agree, I have an 18 year ol on loan at the moment. She was still eventing at BE100 level when I got her and you would never guess her age. I think having an older more experienced horse can sometimes be a blessing. All the hard work has already been done (training wise) and so I can enjoy her and have fun with her. Her age put me off at first but when I went to see her I didnt think twice about having her.
If you are buying then a vetting is a must but apart from that if you find the right horse then go for it! Good luck :)
 
I've recently bought an 11 year old cob, I had him vetted and the vet said for a heavy he has very fexible joints. Physio came out yesterday for a check over and said he had 4 very clean limbs for a cob. But saying that my previous cob had ringbone at 11 and was PTS so it's the luck of the draw I suppose :( Just have a vetting done, and good luck. Cobs are fab and mine is worth his weight in gold :)
 
I have a 17hh shire x TB still going very strong at 21. Had a cobby mare who won the riding club cup for the most points during the year (all events she did SJ XC dressage, gymkhana games, showing/ family pony) at the age of 23. I love oldies
 
my new cob is 22yrs old, been well looked after and could give a horse 10 yrs younger a run for its money.

Age definatly wouldnt put me off- you could have a 8 yr old that has had massive vet problems. i think if it hasnt seen the vet for anything serious over the last few yrs then i would happily by another oldie
 
we bought a 19 year old with low mileage, no competition career.

He was pulled out 2nd in a HOYs qualifier, took OH hunting, ODE and HT. Gets 68-72% dressage every time out and jumps everything he's put at.

He's 25 now and still can do his lateral work. leg yeild in canter and half pass.

He's the best horse I have ever bought :D:D
 
At 11 he's just entering his prime! Like any horse, he could go on for 15 years or go lame tomorrow, but if he's sound at 11 he's probably learned to look after himself and could be expected to carry on doing so.
 
I bought a 16 yr old for my kids and age didn't put me off at all. She could pass for an 8 yr old most days! Got myself a 6 yr old who I ended up having to retire after 4 months. Both were vetted. I would have no problems with a good sound 11 yr old. Good luck and hope all goes well.
