Hi

I have just imported a BWB mare from UK to Norway she has been here around a month or so, everything has gone great until the weather has turned and now she is stabled more the problems have begun within the past 3 days. When she was on my sisters yard for a month nothing showed due to her being kept out 24/7.

She is coughing a lot and wheezing (no snot or running from nose just being coughed up) after being stabled overnight, both my other horses are all fine and one is sensitive with bad hay/dust, the hay is good and bedding is not too dusty. It is becoming a nightmare when ridden she constantly coughs and makes a wheezing noise. I am going to have to trailer her to my (local

) horse vet 5 hours away to find out whats going on...

I had her five stage vetted with bloods taken in the UK should any breathing problems have been picked up on? I paid a lot for her to be imported and was so careful to be thorough and to be honest as much as she is great I am a little gutted as I had planned to compete her and then sell her on a little later on.

Do I have any come backs on the vet? Can anyone suggest a supplement I can give her?

How was she kept in the UK? Yes wind problems should be picked up on a 5 stage vetting, but this is a month down the line, plus if she was kept out when vetted and her problems only occur when stable, I don't see how they could be picked up. Have you tried changing her bdding to something dust free and feeding hay soaked?

I have started to soak her hay this evening and she is on sawdust that had been specially treated to have dust removed, it is good stuff I have sent from Sweden as my boys Welsh A is sensitive. The stables are well ventilated with a large window and vent in each box plus in the summer I leave the side door open.

The dealer I bought her from said she was living out and when stabled at all on haylage.

Ohhh this is just my luck she is so perfect in every other way, thr trouble with living here is it is hard to get to the vet and if things come up fair enough thats horses but to go out and buy health problems is my worst nightmare hence why I have my horses 5 staged.

My mare has a bad dust cough. If she sees hay or straw she'll start coughing. But it won't show up in the summer as she is out. She will still cough on soaked hay - but not haylage. I can keep he in 24/7 and as long as she is on haylage and not straw and she won't cough.

I wouldn't try pursing the vets, it wouldn't have shown up. Also the dealer may only have owned her during the summer so they might not have known about it.

If she had been living out then it is quite possible that she wouldn't have shown any signs of RAO on vetting.

I wouldn't lose too much heart if she is otherwise perfect, as management changes can make a big difference (keep her out as much as possible and all the things mentioned by others), and inhaled steroids can have a huge effect. The key is to minimise the number of episodes she has so that lung damage is minimised.

It's always possible that she has picked up a virus whilst travelling - and I would certainly get her blood tested to find out. Does she have a temperature???
