I put the poll in this section so that it doesn't get lost too quickly and hopefully gets maximum responses.

At the cross-country phase of the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials a loose dog ran from the crowd as a competitor, having jumped fence 14 was coming around the corner to approach fence 15 the first water complex.

It caused the horse to swerve and continued chasing it as it approached the fence. The horse and rider got through the complex, but then the dog continued chasing the horse through the water. Clearly the rider and horse were aware of the presence of the dog. Attempting fence 16 the horse had a run out. A member of the public wrestled the dog to the ground and put a makeshift lead around its neck with what looked like his trouser belt.

Later in the afternoon, there was a call over the tannoy system for the owners to reclaim a lost dog which had made its way to one of the catering outlets.

I also saw later in the afternoon some dog events in one of the smaller arenas where all the dogs were under control.

The majority of dogs at the event were under control and well-behaved.

But is it fair to the competitors, many of which are at international level, that they may be disadvantaged by a loose dog, which may not only alter their position but ultimately affect the safety of the horse and rider?

Dogs weren't allowed at the Olympics. Spectators had the choice to attend with their dogs or not. Riders competed with the same chance and spectators seemed very happy.

It really is an open question. Should dogs be allowed at major events?

Over to you!

having FJ at Weston Park Interntational and seen a terrier chase a horse and rider for over 5 fences absolutely not bar guide dogs. Unfortunately the minority spoil it for the majority, but one of these days there will be a nasty accident.

Having lunched well, I pressed No, as in NO they shouldn't be there. It should have been YES, as in they should be banned from major events. I see far too many dogs which are being worn as labels. Leave the poor creatures at home, and in the cool.

Alec.

yes they should be banned
i just dont get taking them there anyway - most look miserable or scared tbh

PS =- i answered the title question - should dogs be banned - but the poll question is should dogs be allowed - so i answered yes - as in they should be banned - this poll will not be valid as im sure there'll be many more who make mistakes

Yes hands up - I realised after posting and found I couldn't edit the title.

Shame - but useful to get the feedback from others.

I hadn't realised that there were so many occurances.

Hopefully others will read this posts and get it right - maybe!

Teach me to try and be in a hurry!!!

Jeez, I've chosen the wrong option on the poll due to the ambiguity of the post title and poll question.

I said yes, should have said no!!

I think your poll results are going to be rather skewed :o

I chose yes, but meant no! (as in they shouldn't be allowed IMO)

Why don't you start another thread an re-do it. Just write this one off.

Dogs should be left at home in my opinion. Burghley is one of the places I have been to with dogs under everyone's feet and getting really stressed in the crowds. Last year a call went out for a lost puppy that had been with a small child who had let the lead go. All I could think about is how stressed that poor little mite may be and kept hoping I would'nt see it running across the cross country course. Another stupid individual had left a dog unattended in a car and the call went out for them to go and remove the dog. I know the course is a long and exciting walk for both dogs and owners, but personally I leave my dog at home and take her for a nice walk when I get back.
